Lindsay, your article is excellent and I cannot believe the short time in which you had to prepare it. I would like to note only one discrepancy in your report of which I am aware, i.e., your reference which suggests that Councilors Popoff, Recker and myself made a precondition to our current city manager's hiring the promotion of Dana Sousa to Asst. City Manager. I cannot speak for the others, but as you may recall, Councilor Forcht and I voted in support for the young man from Virginia. As far as I know, neither he nor I made this decision based on any precondition our choices---quite frankly, it did not not enter my mind. As quoted in the Eagale shortly after the selection of Mr. Thompson as our city manager, I expressed an opinion that Dana had all of the OJT qualifications to progress to at least asst. city manager wherever that may take him. As was the case in my former occupation (city planner), however, in order to move up vertically, you had to be willing to move geographically which is what he decided to do. I've been there, as I'm sure those of you in the private sector have as well. Let's give Dana all the alcolades he has earned and, who knows, maybe he will come back to one of his favorite places either as a public servant or a retiree.

On Letter To The Editor: Racism, rancor and recklessness

I would like to compliment Orien Bank Executives for hitting the question of stability directly on the head by opening themselves up for this interview. Once you investigate the bank's performance over the past several years, in particular, you will be assured that the feds are over-reacting. My guess is that the feds are targeting smaller banks and are requiring certain agreements simply to cover their (tails)and lack of monitoring other banks which are in trouble now for their questionable loans. Chris, thank you for acknowledging the contributions of Keith (and Barb---I am informed by Keith that she is the power behind the throne) Dameron and Orion Bank to the community via the "In the Round" series on, as you stated, many subjects of interest/concern to our island community. Don, enjoyed your column. My bet is that you will lose the pounds, but still enjoy the pot belly shared by the Papua---unfortunately, gravity takes its toll, e.g., I used to have big tits (for a man), but they now seem to have re-established themselves lower down (I refuse to get into a detailed discussion of that phenomimal

Mr. Montel, please post your evidence of collusion between me and any of the recent candidates for office and/or Godfrey Davies. Godfrey was, in effect, my campaign manager during my election in 2006. The reason you haven't found any of the recovered emails between he and I is that there are none relating to local politics. As he stated to me at that time, he supported the person not just a particular issue, e.g., he was onboard with me prior to my coming out against the STRP. Ask former Councilor Tucker about Godfrey's integrity in that regard. I would be interested in his response if you have the backbone to share it with the rest of us. Come on, tell us your identy as well. Chuck Kiester

On Letter to the Editor: Attacked

Again, my fellow residents: Let us try to refrain from making nasty comments, especially about those who have a sufficient amount of backbone to identity themselves in their letters or blog comments.

As to former Councilor Tucker, I too am concerned that if he were to be hired as the city's attorney, he would become the 8th councilor in terms of decisions made by the City Council. I say this as I have witnessed first hand his comments and decisions regarding the rights of the community versus the property rights of individual owners. As many of you witnessed, Mr. Tucker turned his back to me at City Council meetings any time I chose to speak on an issue, especially when I said "community rights." I would say that that is a sign of a bully and coward who, when ultimately faced with someone who stood up to his biased opinion, could or would not be swayed from an opinion that, as best as I can tell, only benefited himself.

My question to you is this: do you really want a person, as your city attorney, to bring his political bias to the table when advising the city council

On Letter to the editor: Another outrage

Ladies and Gentlemen, if you are very, very lucky, someday you will meet a couple as bright, genuinely nice people, who haven't been afraid to state their opinion or be honest in their feelings as Linda and Russ Columbo. As Russ stated, Councilor Kiester has not always agreed with me, so I am responding to say that it is okay to agree to disagree without animosity.

I send this blog in part to defend the right of the Lazarus's and the Columbo's in their respective rights of free speech and the ability to agree to disagree on various city issues.

Please, let us all remain true to this principle, and avoid personal likes and dislikes. I now shake hands with both John Asceri and Monty Lazarus (it took me awhile)even though they were the ones who filed charges against me regarding the accidental deletion of emails.

The point is this: we are all in this together and should not send blogs which are directed to undermine those who dare speak out, especially if you are one of those who are afraid to identify yourself when you post your comments.

On Letter to the Editor: Attacked

Dear Mr Granda & Whomever: It is time to unite the island---not attack those who have a different vision for the future of our beloved island. I would like to ask "Whomever" if he/she has checked with the winning candidates regarding congratulory messages they may have received from those who lost and/or from those who supported them. I have some insight in the way Councilor Forcht operates since we were both on the ballot two years ago vying for one of three open seats on city council. He received the most votes and I came in third. I will say, that since that time, he has steadfastly stood by his promises to those who elected him and dissolution of the city was not one of them. I personally believe that in his recent statements he was trying to bring out those few and their rationale who would like the city to disincorporate--not necessarily to pursue this objective on his part.
