Pro-sewer candidates win Marco City Council election

The first cork popped at 8:15 p.m. at the party for the four pro-sewer City Council candidates on Marco Island. Supporter Pat Neale came out to the crowd at the Shoppes of Olde Marco and shouted, "We are done and we have won!" once over 90 percent of the vote totals in Collier County were counted. Full story »

Tuesday marks the end of the road for the 16 people running for Marco Island and Naples city councils. Some will take a seat on their respective councils, while others will spend the next four years trying to make a difference from the other side of the council dais. Marco Island’s divisive campaign issue: Sewer system or septic tanks?

No issue looms larger in Tuesday’s Marco Island City Council election than the plan to replace the island’s remaining septic tanks with a central sewer system. Of the eight candidates in the race for four council seats, four have vowed to halt the seven-year program that costs individual homeowners around $20,000 to connect to the sewer system. Councilman Ted Forcht, who has two years remaining on his term, broached the idea during an October council meeting. Elections complaint lodged against Celebrate Marco

Marco Island resident Bill McMullan has filed a complaint with the Florida Elections Commission alleging a violation of elections laws by the group Celebrate Marco Inc. His claim is that members of the group are actively participating in the elections process in Marco Island’s City Council race, including taking sides on controversial issues and endorsing candidates.
