The Lely boys and girls golf teams just weren’t in a class with the winning teams in the Collier County Athletic Conference tournaments.
In four-member team play, Jake Delaney and Niko Pagkankungan each shot 74 and Matt Lawrence and Matt Taylor each shot 75 for a 298 score, giving Barron Collier its second straight CCAC title.
Lely was led by Geoff Stephenson with an 85, followed by Ethan Hilliard, 86, Greg Hauze, 90, and Tim Prior, 91, for a team total of 352.
Freshman Emma Smyser shot a 74 to lead Gulf Coast to victory in the girls meet. Her team’s total was 378.
Lely did not have four players. Kora Johnson shot 110, Katy Francisco, 111 and Ashley Russetto, 135.
The Lely cross country teams traveled to the Spanish River Invitational on Saturday with the boys placing third and the girls fourth.
“This was an early-season meet as we try to figure out how our kids stack up,” coach Mark McGarity said. “Ulises Vivar, a freshman, had a phenomenal race — he ran his heart out.”
Vivar had a personal best of 18:56, finishing 12th.
Senior Andy Martinez led the boys with a sixth-place finish in 18:21. Daryl Townsend had a good time, running in 19:28 and finishing 18th, McGarity said.
Amber Imm topped the Lely girls, finishing fourth in 21:10.
“Amber is recovering from mono and is still about 80 percent,” McGarity said. “We probably will hold her out of the next two races.”
Heather Chairez placed 13th in 23:56 and Jade Dworkin 15th in 23:59.
In volleyball, Lely revenged an earlier volleyball loss, downing Palmetto Ridge, 25-13, 25-22, 25-17.
Amy Russetto led in assists with 34, Kiley Stoll in kills and digs with 13 each, with Chevy Criscuoli adding six kills and six digs. Lely is at Golden Gate Wednesday. The Junior varsity and freshmen teams also won.
