With stiff competition, seniors Fortin Faustin and Manolitha Joseph won the overall most valuable player awards for Lely High’s track and field team.

The announcement came at the team’s awards dinner at the school on Monday.

“We had a lot of kids who stepped up this season, but Fortin and Manolitha stood out the most,” coach Mark McGarity said.

Fortin never lost in the long jump all season, while also being a team leader in the 100-meter hurdles, 100-yard sprint and as a member of the 4x100 relay team.

“It was unfortunate for Fortin to sustain an injury before regional competition, eliminating his chance to compete at state,” McGarity said. “He had worked very hard and it was a shame that he didn’t get to state to show off his talents.”

Joseph did go to state in the 100 and 200-meter runs. She holds the school record in both events. She also competed in the long jump and was a member of the 4x100 relay team.

“Without a doubt she is the best overall, natural female athlete to ever grace the hallways of Lely High School,” girls coach Nick Young said of Joseph.

They also were named the most valuable sprinters on the team.

Most improved honors went to Marco senior Lindsey Bott and freshman Daniel Vientimilla.

“Daniel improved every week, competing in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay,” McGarity said.

“Lindsey set a new school mark in the pole vault at 10 feet. She won the district, placed third in the regional and sixth in the state.”

Most valuable distance runner honors went to Marco’s Amber Imm and Sam Walker. Imm, a junior, placed 11th at state in the one and two-mile events.

“Amber was juts awesome and Sam (a senior) constantly pushed himself to get better,” McGarity said.

Marco’s Mercedes Farhat won the Pre Award that went to a member who competed in cross country and track, always giving a 100 percent effort, McGarity said.

“Mercedes had a successful year in both sports while also excelling in swimming during cross country,” McGarity said. “Through hard work and dedication she support Lely’s running programs.”

Most valuable jumper honors went to junior Victoria Howard and sophomore Jhony Faustin. Howard holds the county and school triple-jump records, while going to state in the long jump.

Most valuable throwers were senior Nigel Swilley and sophomore Kreda Reseau, both scoring points in shot put and discuss in district competition.

The Guts Award went to Marco’s Tommy Juday, a senior, and sophomore Myrline Charelus.

“They pushed themselves, taking the extra step to make themselves better,” McGarity said of the two.

The top hurdlers were seniors Wickenson Jean Louis and Joanne Pettithomme. Louis won the 300-meter hurdles in district competition.

Jhony Faustin and Andrene Dume, a freshman, were named the top underclassmen. Both scored points in district and regional competition.
