Your News: 'Little Brother' wins model car contest
FORT MYERS David Moll may get some odd looks when he tells people that Justin is his “Little Brother”. However, the two have indeed been “Brothers” since they were matched through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of SWFL’s (BBBS-SWFL) mentoring program over five years ago.
They meet on a regular basis to do various activities within the community, including attending sporting events, BBBS-SWFL hosted events, movies, working on school assignments, or just “hanging out”. Recently, they signed up to be in a model car building contest organized by the Gulf Shore Mustang Club of SWFL.
The club sponsored ten area youth in a model building contest aimed at getting kids involved with the old car hobby. Children in the BBBS-SWFL program were invited to sign up for the contest with their “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” assisting them. The judging event was held on Thursday, May 8, at Parrot Key near Ft. Myers Beach, in conjunction with a Mustang Car Show.
David and Justin attended the event in hopes of having Justin’s car chosen as the winner for this contest, which would also allow them to be entered into a national contest that includes a trip to CA!
Much to the delight of Justin and his “Big Brother” David, their car was chosen as the 1st place winner! Justin received a big blue ribbon, and had the opportunity to ride in one of the Mustangs on display for the car show that evening.
“Justin was so happy to have his car chosen as the winner,” said his Big Brother, David Moll. “But, more important than winning the contest was the process of building the car together. It really gave us prime opportunity to spend quality time talking about things like the importance of paying attention to detail, staying positive, and life lessons about winning and losing. I would remind Justin that winning isn’t the final result, but that the most important part is the process of learning while you’re working toward something.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest provider of one-to-one youth mentoring services in the United States. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Florida, a United Way agency, has been bringing caring adults into the lives of local children for more than 30 years and is the only one-to-one youth mentoring program in Southwest Florida.
