Here is this week’s run down of games played in the Marco Island Baseball League games, provided by board member Bill Hollowsky.
Cubs, 8, Dodgers, 7
The Dodgers came out swinging against the Cubs. The Dodgers, playing their best game of the season, had the undefeated Cubs on the ropes through most of the game. With Tyler Grisham pitching an outstanding game for the Dodgers, the Cubs were held until late in the game when they ending their batting slump and pushed in the two final runs to take the win.
Coach Andy Delgado said he was really knocked-out by the Dodgers enthusiasm. He said James Steele’s pitching helped the Cubs take the close win.
Indians, 11, Marlins, 2
A four-run second inning got the Indians rolling to a win. The Indians Paul Servante knocked in the first run in the opening inning then four more runs were scored by Stephen Neptune, Raul Rodriguez, Liam Hollowsky and Andrew Smith in the second. The Marlins Cody Dean snagged a screaming line-drive hit by Nick Jones to halt a rally.
The Marlins two runs came on a big hit by Trevor Dye. With bases loaded, the Marlins looked like they would tie the game but Indians pitcher Cole Cleary struck out the last two batters ending the Marlins charge. Jacob Olszewski and by Sean Waters also knocked in runs for the Indians.
Indians coach Bill Hollowsky said, “We are really proud of the team. We had a very tough start this season but the kids have really worked hard and continue to show great determination.” He also said that Matthew Nugent, Cody Dean, and Trevor Dye of the Marlins played their heart outs.
The division standings show the Cubs in the lead at 6-0, Marlins and Indians at 4-2 and the Dodger, 0-6.
Mets, 10, Yankees, 1
In the Rookie Division, the Yankees fell to the Mets 10-1. Jay Vanderjagt scored the only run for the Yankees on a Howie Jordan hit. Jordan led the Yankees with two hits, while Brian Kocak, Cameron Jones and Vanderjagt each had a hit. There was no report on the winning team.
