Plenty of action highlights softball playoffs

The Marco Island Men’s Senior Softball League action had some close and not-so-close games in its playoffs that continued past deadline on Thursday.

Here is Commissioner Bill Shurina’s report.

Island League Playoffs:

Bertram Orthopaedics, 16, Cedar Bay, 3

Winning pitcher Bill Kaschube survived a first-inning, no-out, bases-loaded jam, with the help of a double play turned by Herm Griffith, then Bertram’s took over. John Barrett, Jerry Engel, Ken Planck and Bill Griffin slammed out three hits each to lead Bertram’s to the win. Barrett knocked in five runs, Planck three and Griffin two. Al Cenicola and Pat Keehan also had two hits and two RBI for Bertram’s. Tom Pugh and Ralph Leiterding plated Cedar Bay’s runs.

Sand Bar, 14, Moose, 6

Sand Bar’s bats were smoking as eight players had two or more hits. Art Weins, Dan Dumbauld, George Schnorr, Murph Knapke, Ron Schudes, Art Fletcher, Ron Peterson, Jim George and pitcher Jack O’Brien led Sand Bar to the win. The Moose were led by Tom Angelo, Dom Fiorda, Ed Kingsbury, Denny Lello, Jimmy Cuevas and Pete Oellrich.

Nacho Mama’s, 11, Bertram Orthopaedics, 0

Pitcher Jim Cnudde blanked Bertram’s for his third shutout of the season. Ray Niemeyer knocked in three runs, while John Luegering, Mike Behr, Dave Coward, Mike Hopkins, Bill Shurina and Joe Cervelli had key hits. John DeRosa slapped out two hits for Bertram’s.

Cedar Bay, 9, Moose, 5

Just too many injuries haunted the Moose at the end of the season, this time losing to Cedar Bay. Pitcher Dave Callahan helped his own cause, driving in two runs with a triple. Don Schwartz, Craig Cunningham, Tom Pugh, Jim Lattimore, Tom McCullough and Jim Green all knocked in runs for Cedar Bay. Dom Fiorda drove in two runs on a triple, while Pete Oellrich and Harry Mckee to lead the Moose.

Nacho Mama’s, 7, Sand Bar, 4

Nacho Mama’s scored all its runs in the third inning after falling behind. Bill Shurina led the clinching rally with a bases-loaded triple. Mike Behr and Steve Kaufman drove in two runs each for Nacho Mamma’s. Starring for Sand Bar were Dan Cody, Art Weins, Art Fletcher and Ron Shudes.

Marco Division:

Marco Community Bank, 5, Cathy O’Clarke’s, 4

The Bank scored three runs in the last at-bat to win the game. Bruce Steele, Keith Stought and Don Wetzel keyed the rally. Steele also supplied early punch, along with Steve Slaggie. For O’Clarke’s Roger Wise and George Bennett led the team, with Wise knocking in three runs.

ADKOS, 16, Capt. Brien’s, 4

ADKOS rattled off 15 runs in the first four innings to sink Capt. Brien’s. Dave Coward, with four RBI and Chet Dal Bianco, three RBI, each had three hits, while George Kirk and George Dempsey knocked in two runs each. A highlight for Capt. Brien’s was it pulled off a triple play in the first inning. Offensively, Jake Jacobson, Ray Zielinski and Leroy Fishleigh led in hitting.

Marco Community Bank, 8, Rookies, 7

Don Wetzel, John Gamble, Jim Walsh, Chuck Wilson, Joe Furst and Ray Zielinksi, with two RBI, all knocked in runs for the Bank. John Remhoff and Ed Kopecky homered and John Gill knocked in two runs to lead Rookies. Remhoff also tripled.

Crazy Flamingo, 13, ADKOS, 8

Tom and Jack Patterson were keys to Flamingo’s win. Dick DeAnna, three hits and two RBI and Bob Gober and Mel Mendel drove in two runs each for Flamingo’s. Chet Dal Bianco with three hits, including two triples and George Dempsey and Pete Baker, with a triple, supplied the fire power for ADKOS.

Rookies, 12, Capt. Brien’s 4

Rookies kept its season alive with a win in the loser’s bracket in the Marco Division. John Gill, Bill Voss, Al Bozzo, John Remhoff, Dean Lambros, Len Crane and Walt Daleske led Rookies.

Cathy O’Clarke’s, 13, ADKOS, 8

ADKOS was eliminated from the tournament with its loss. O’Clarke’s used five-run innings in the first and sixth to ice the win. Bob Myslovic, a bases-load double, Bill Diamond’s two-run triple and John Hedges three hits led O’Clarke’s. Chet Dal Bianco, Pat Corraggio and Dave Coward led ADKOS.

Crazy Flaming, 5, Marco Community Bank, 4

Crazy Flamingo advanced to the championship game in the Marco Division with its win, scoring all five runs in the fourth inning. Key hits were Mel Mandel’s two-run double, Paul Shelton’s triple and Bob Kirsinger’s RBI single. Bruce Steele, Keith Stought, Harry McKee and Don Wetzel led the Bank.

Rookies, 14, Cathy O’Clarke’s, 2

Rookies eliminated O’Clarke’s with its win as it scored 11 runs in the first three innings. Bill Voss and Bill Himsel knocked in three runs, Nick Brooks two on a triple, Roger Fleming two on a double, while Walt Daleske, Ed Kopecky, Dean Lambros and Al Bozzo all plated runs. O’Clarke’s runs came on hits by Bill Diamond and Tony Meilan.
