Lely High’s baseball sojourn continues to be rocky as the Trojans were humbled by St. John Neumann, 10-0, at home on Wednesday night.
Lely pitcher Steven Goldsmith couldn’t get out of the first inning as the Celtics tallied seven runs.
Celtics pitcher Sonny Dillinger led the way with key hits and tossed a three-hitter at the Trojans.
Will Affleck helped Dillinger with a double and Garrett Ocana tripled.
The Trojans best chance was in the third inning when they loaded the bases, helped by Dillinger who momentarily lost his control, walking two of three runners.
Lely coach Mike Miller went to the hitter to make it explicit that he was to take at least the first pitch, or until Dillinger threw a strike. On the first pitch, the batter grounded back to Dillinger to end the inning.
Lely is now 2-11.
“We were going in the right direction for a couple of weeks, but we reverted to our old ways,” Miller said of the game. “I gave them seven signals (to batters) and they missed them all. It was pretty ugly.”
The 10-run rule took effect in the fifth inning, ending the game. Miller’s frustration led him to taking out four seniors and playing four freshmen.
“I talked with some of the players until 9:30,” Miller said. “I told them I missed my own son’s game and you show up and play like this. I told them if I can dedicate myself then they need to dedicate themselves. If we continue to play the way we have recently (losing three straight games) I will bring up more freshman to play.”
