New Marco council to begin narrowing city manager candidates

Short list not available yet

Tom Freijo was working down to the wire this week to prepare a list of candidates for City Council to consider as Marco Island’s new — and second-ever — city manager.

Between conducting phone interviews with the candidates, he was able to gently let an Eagle reporter down: a list of candidates will not be available until Monday.

Residents will be able to sit in on council discussions Monday evening, as the newly sworn in councilors join their more seasoned counterparts to start narrowing down that list. He is expected to present the council with 12 to 18 candidates, allowing them to pare the list down to eight or nine. A schedule from Freijo projects that about two hours should be set aside for the discussion.

A total of 74 applicants have put their names in for the job.

Once council has selected their semifinalists, Freijo will conduct background checks. At the following council meeting, on April 7, he will present an interview guide to the council with detailed information on the four to six finalists and direction on how to conduct the on-site interviews. The following week, councilors will conduct interviews with the finalists over two days, making their final selection April 15.

Check back on marconews.com Monday afternoon to get a look at the short list of 12 to 18 candidates before councilors begin their deliberations.
