Division titles clinched in men’s senior softball

Divisional winners have been determined, even though there are two more games for each team in the Island Division of the Marco Island Men’s Senior Softball League.
Nacho Mama’s holds a two-game lead over the Moose at 19-11. If Mama’s loses two and the Moose win the last two they would be tied at 19-11, but Mama’s wins because in a head-to-head match up Mama’s won four while losing just three to the Moose.
In the Marco Division all games have been played, with Rookies winning with a 15-7 mark.

Island Division
Sand Bar, 8, Moose, 3
Sand Bar scored four runs in the fourth inning to clinch its win over the Moose. In the inning a two-RBI single by George Schnorr and RBI hits by Tom O’Connell and Jim George proved the difference. Dick Knothe added three hits for Sand Bar. Jack O’Brien, pitching his first game of the season, got the win and helped himself by knocking in a run. Moose’s Ron Hobson and Dom Fiorda each had two hits apiece, with one of Fiorda’s being a triple.
Moose, 13, Cedar Bay, 10
Moose ended its losing streak in an extra inning win. Dom Fiorda’s two-RBI triple in the eighth was the difference. Ron Hobson added three hits for the Moose.
Bertram Orthopaedics, 10, Nacho Mama’s, 8
Bertram’s broke open a tie game, scoring five runs in the fifth and another three in the sixth. Nacho’s scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the game close. Bill Griffin and Bill Dineno each had two RBI for Bertram’s. Jerry Cnudde had two RBI for Nacho’s and teammate Mike Hopkins slammed a triple.
Cedar Bay, 9, Nacho Mama’s, 4
Cedar Bay had two big innings against Nacho Mama’s, scoring three runs in the first and four runs in the third to earn its win. Craig Cunningham, Dave Banghart and Fran Diotte, each had two hits and two RBI, while Tom McCullough and Steve Sayre had two hits and one RBI each for Cedar Bay. Nacho’s runs came on a two-run single by Joe Cervelli, a run-scoring triple from John Remhoff and a single from John Luegering.
Sand Bar, 10, Cedar Bay, 7
Sand Bar scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 10-0 lead and held off a late rally by Cedar Bay. Art Fletcher, Art Weins, and Jim George all had two RBI for Sand Bar. Tom Pugh had a two-run double for Cedar Bay. Pitcher Jack O’Brien won his second straight game.
Moose, 13, Bertram Orthopaedics, 10
The game was tied three times before the Moose scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a two-run triple by Dom Fiorda who had three hits. Ed Kingsbury slammed a two-run triple and Ron Hobson knocked in three runs. Pete Keelen knocked in three runs, while Nick Brooks slapped out three hits and knocked in two runs, while John Barrett had three hits and an RBI for Bertram’s.
Nacho Mama’s, 6, Bertram Orthopaedics, 0
Nacho Mama’s clinched the Island Division title with its win over Bertram’s. Winning pitcher Jerry Cnudde pitched a two-hit shutout. Doug Tuttle led the way with three hits and two RBI. Teammates Mike Hopkins and Clay Zyerveld also knocked in two runs each.
Cedar Bay 7, Bertram Orthopaedics, 6
Herman Griffith opened the game with a home run as Bertram’s scored three runs with John Barrett and Bill Dineno also driving in runs. Bertram’s added to its lead in the second on RBI hits from Jerry Engel and John DeRosa. Cedar Bay whittled away at Bertram’s lead, scoring a run in the second on a Steve Sayre hit and tying the game in the sixth on Bob Levasseur’s two-run double. Bertram’s scored a run in the top of the seventh only to see Cedar Bay’s Fran Diotte tie the game with his RBI hit and Sayre drive in the winning run. Jerry Engel had four hits for Bertram’s.
Moose, 9, Sand Bar 5
Sand Bar scored five runs in first on hits by Art Weins, Ron Peterson and Art Fletcher, only to be shutout the rest of the game by Moose pitcher Lou Wolfenson. The Moose scored all the runs it needed the bottom of first, scoring seven times. Ed Kingsbury and Jimmy Cuevas each drove in two runs, while Ron Hobson, Denny Lello and John Remhoff each drove in one run. The Moose added insurance runs in the fourth on RBI hits by John Cavanagh and Kingsbury.
Marco Division:
Rookies, 4, ADKOS, 3
Rookies scored two runs in the first on a two-run triple by Nick Brooks, and another two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Ed Kopecky, the winning pitcher. ADKOS’ Dave Coward accounted for two RBI and Pat Coraggio the other with a triple. John Remhoff had three hits, including a triple for Rookies. Doug Smith slapped out three hits for ADKOS.
Crazy Flamingo, 11, Marco Community Bank, 9
Crazy Flamingo scored five runs in the last inning to capture second place. Bob Gober had three hits and five RBI. Teammates Joe Iuliano, Roger Fleming and Tom Patterson had three hits each, with Patterson getting two RBI. One of Chuck Wilson’s three hits was a home run, while Ray Zielinski and Harry McKee also had two hits and knocked in runs for the Bank.
Cathy O’Clarke’s, 17, Capt. Brien’s, 12
Cathy O’Clarke’s scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to win the game after trailing 11-7. Charley Zimmer had five RBI, Bill Dauch three and George Zwerver two to pace O’Clarke’s attack. Capt. Brien’s Leroy Fishleigh had three hits and two RBI. Teammates Dan Stanard and Stan Sutphen each had two hits, including triples, and two RBI each, with Jim Langdon contributing two RBI on two hits.

Nacho Mama’s, 19-9, Moose, 17-11, Sand Bar, 11-15, Bertram Orthopaedics and Cedar Bay, 11-17.
Final Marco Division standings:
Rookies, 15-7, Crazy Flamingo and ADKOS, 12-10, Marco Community Bank, 10-12, Cathy O’Clarke’s, 9-13, Capt. Brien’s, 8-14.
