Bertram Orthopaedics was the hot team for the week in the Marco Island Men’s Senior Softball League.
The team went 3-0, with one win against the second-place Moose, hurting their cause to catch first-place Nacho Mama’s in the Island Division. Bertram’s was 7-14 before the three-game run.
In the Marco Division, Rookies clinched first place, winning two of three, while second-place ADKOS went 1-2.
Here’s Commissioner Bill Shurina’s report.
Bertram Orthopaedics, 8, Sand Bar, 4
Bertram’s scored eight runs in the first three innings in beating Sand Bar. Jerry Engel and John Barrett knocked in two runs each to pace Bertram’s. Bill Dineno, Herman Griffith, Larry Thompson, and Engel all had two hits in the game. Sand Bar’s runs were driven in by Rich Schiller, Dan Cody, Tom O’Connell and Ron Engels. Jim George, Ron Petersen, George Schnorr and O’Connell all had two hits each for Sand Bar.
Bertram Orthopaedics, 7, Moose, 4
Bertram’s opened up a 7-0 margin over the Moose and then had to hold off a last-inning rally by the Moose. Larry Laird and Jerry Engel each had two RBI for Bertram’s. Engel, Larry Thompson and Herman Griffith all had two hits. Griffith had a double and triple. Moose’s rally in the seventh came on a three-run homer by Lou Wolfenson. Tom Angelo had three hits, including a triple for the Moose. Pete Oellrich, Dom Fiorda and Wolfenson had two hits for the Moose.
Nacho Mama’s, 10, Cedar Bay, 6
This game went into extra innings with Doug Tuttle driving in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Clay Zyerveld and Hopkins had key hits leading to insurance runs in the eight. Ray Niemeyer and John Luegering had two RBI for Nacho’s. Jim Bob Yount, Niemeyer, and Doug Tuttle all had two hits in the win. Cedar Bay runs came on a triple by Tom Pugh in the first, Jim Green added two more with a double in the third and Ralph Leiterding two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
Nacho Mama’s, 3, Moose, 2
This contest was between the first-place Nacho Mama’s and second-place Moose. The teams had split their first six games. This game was no different, with it going to extra innings before Jim Yount drove in the winning run in the top of the eight inning. Both pitcher’s Nacho’s Jerry Cnudde and Moose’s Lou Wolfenson pitched an exceptional game. Nacho’s scored their two runs prior to Yount’s winning hit. Doug Tuttle and Mike Hopkins knocked in the runs. Pete Oellrich and Bill Diamond brought in the Moose runs.
Nacho Mama’s, 13, Cedar Bay, 10
Both teams scored three runs in the first on bases loaded doubles, Nachos’ on Clay Zyerveld and Cedar Bay on Fran Diotte hits. Nacho’s scored four in third and three in the with the key hits coming from Joe Cervelli and Mike Hopkins. Craig Cunningham made it a one-run game with a grand slam homer in the fifth. Nacho’s Mike Hopkins slapped out four hits, bringing home two runs, Clay Zyerveld had four RBI and Mike Behr and Bill Shurina each had three hits. Bernie Seidman and Craig Cunningham had two hits each for Cedar Bay.
Bertram Orthopaedics, 7, Sand Bar, 6
Sand Bar scored five runs in the first inning on a number of walks and a base-loaded double by Art Fletcher. Bertram’s then brought in Bill Griffin who pitched six innings in relief to get the win. He gave up only one run over the last six innings as Bertram’s rallied for the win. Herm Griffith made a number of defensive plays contributing to the win.
Marco League:
Marco Community Bank, 5, Rookies, 1
Rookies scored and unearned run in the first inning and then were shut out by winning pitcher Bob Zinkevicz the balance of the game. Joe Furst had two RBI double in the first giving the Bank all the runs they would need. Mitch Gilbert and Chuck Wilson had two hits apiece, with Gilbert getting a RBI for the Bank. John Remhoff had two hits for Rookies.
Capt. Brien’s, 10, Crazy Flamingo, 5
Mike Galatis, Dan Stanard and George Bennett supplied all the hitting needed for the win. Defensive gems in the field by Bill Moors and George Bennett snuffed out a potential late-game rally by Flamingo’s.
Cathy O’Clarke’s 19, ADKOS, 15
In a slugfest, O’Clarke’s had to survive a seven-run seventh inning to gain the win. Major contributors included Bill Dauch with four hits and four RBI, John Ranieri, four hits and two RBI, Roger Wise and Bob Myslovic each had three hits and three RBI, Charley Zimmer had two hits and two RBI, Frank Dooley slammed a triple, knocking in two runs. ADKOS was led by Dave Coward’s three hits and four RBI, Pete Baker, three RBI, Tommy Francese and Mark Nahabedia two hits and two RBI each and Pat Coraggio with three hits and a run batted in.
Capt. Brien’s, 9, Cathy O’Clarke’s, 8
Cathy O’Clarke’s scored five runs in the first on two RBI triples by Bill Dauch and John Ranieri, plus a RBI single by Bob Myslovic. Capt. Brien’s rallied and tied the score at 6-6 at the end of the third inning. But O’Clarke’s scored two runs in the top of the fifth on a Frank Dooley RBI and a bases loaded walk to Dauch. Capt. Brien’s scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI hits from Jim Langdon, Jake Jacobson and Dan O’Sullivan. Dan Stanard, Lee Dilk and Jake Jacobson each had three hits in the game for O’Brien’s.
Crazy Flamingo, 12, Marco Community Bank, 11
Flamingo’s had to survive a last-inning rally by the Bank, when the Bank scored fiver runs, but fell one run short. Bob Kirsinger was a hitting machine with four hits, including two doubles and a triple, with three RBI for Flamingo’s. Teammate Dick DeAnna had three hits. The Bank’s Ray Zielinski had two hits, including a triple.
Rookies, 19, ADKOS, 11
Rookies’ bats were smoking hot in beating second-place ADKOS and extending their first place lead. Nicks Brooks had four hits, including a double and triple, with three RBI. Teammates Bill Voss, Roger Fleming, and Bill Himsel each had three hits, with Himsel having three RBI. Other players contributing were Len Crane and Dick Corley, with two hits and two RBI and Al Cenicola with two hits, including a bases loaded double, scoring three runs. Pete Baker had three hits and four RBI for ADKOS while teammate Doug Smith and Chet Dal Bianco had three hits apiece and Dal Bianco having two RBI. 83-year-old Mark Nahabedia continued his torrid hitting streak with two hits and three RBI.
Cathy O’Clarke’s, 11, Marco Community Bank, 8
It was a pitcher’s duel through four innings as O’Clarke’s took a 2-0 lead on a home run by Don Rooksbury and a RBI double by Bob Myslovic. O’Clarke’s scored five runs in the fifth and four in the sixth, with the key hits from Tony Meilan and Rooksbury. The Bank rallied, scoring three runs in the sixth and five in the seventh. The Bank’s big blast was a grand slam homer by Joe Furst. Myslovic and Meilan had three hits each for O’Clarke’s. Steve Slaggie and Furst had three hits each for the Bank.
ADKOS, 16, Capt. Brien’s, 15
ADKOS squeaked by Capt. Brien’s on Chet Dal Bianco’s fourth RBI of the game, on his third hit. Dave Coward also knocked in four runs on three hits for ADKOS. Chet Stewart had three RBI for Capt. Brien’s, while Leroy Fishleigh, Pedro Perez, and Lee Dilk each had two RBI for Brien’s. Dilk and Dan Stanard had triples in the game. George Bennett turned a triple play for Capt. Brien’s.
Rookies, 20, Crazy Flamingo, 14
Rookies had to go into extra innings to clinch the Marco Division. Flamingo’s scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Rookies then erupted for six runs in the top of the eighth to win the game and league title. Al Cenicola had four RBI on three hits, including a double and a triple for Rookies. John Remhoff knocked in two runs on a double and triple and Dick Corley had two RBI. Joe Iuliano had four hits and two RBI for Flamingo’s. Mel Mandel, Pete Baker and Duncan Brodie each knocked in two runs for Flamingo’s.
Island Division Standings:
Nacho Mama’s, 18-7, Moose, 14,-10, Bertram Orthopaedics, 10-14, Sand Bar, 9-14 and Cedar Bay, 9-15.
Marco Division Standings:
Rookies, 14-7, ADKOS, 12-9, Crazy Flamingo, 11-10, Marco Community Bank, 10- 11, Capt. Brien’s and Cathy O’Clarke’s, both 8-13.
