Cheers, groans and friendly trash talk emitted from the Lely High weight room as the footballers got in their workout on Thursday.
Assistant coach Brian Johnessee led more than 50 players through the weight-lifting drills. Then it was out on the practice field for agility skills training.
After its spring football win over Clearwater-Countryside on May 29, the team followed with a three-day camp at Florida Atlantic University the second week of June.
“The game and the camp at FAU helped us with seeing how our kids are matching up to their positions,” coach Steve Pricer said.
Jhonny Faustin impressed with seven interceptions, returning three for touchdowns in full-team competitions with Gulf Coast, South Fort Myers, Deerfield, Cape Coral and Ida Baker.
Lely quarterback Dennis Marcelin learned more about his new position for this fall by going up against some very strong competition.
“The strong competition helped him grow,” Pricer said. “Overall he did well and I am happy with his progress, but he still has a long way to go.”
Next week Lely will be working on its offensive and defensive strategies and will soon start playing seven-on-seven games with area high schools.
“The games are mostly for passing, but defensive backs certainly get a work out,” Pricer said.
