Not pretty: Naples looks to cut $400,000 from road landscaping, street lighting

Naples City Council appears poised to cut $400,000 in landscaping, street lighting and roadway improvements from the fiscal 2008 budget.

At a council workshop this morning, the members heard options for how to trim the project, but expressed more support for abolishing items alltogether until the budget picture clears up.

The improvements, slated for U.S. 41 between Seventh Avenue North and 17th Avenue North, included the addition of median lighting, replacement of concrete traffic islands with brick and landscaping, overhaul of irrigation systems and rehabilitation of several plant beds.

While City Council members will not vote on the item until Wednesday's meeting, they developed what Mayor Bill Barnett called a "clear consensus" on the need to do away with the projects in favor of preserving money for the general operating budget.
