Over 25 children from grades 1 through 5 attended the Whole Wide World Event – Asia in the A. Gordon Lozier Children’s Room at the Marco Island Library Thursday afternoon.

Instructor Ellen Tanner introduced the children to Asia through different activities. Tanner first showed the children where Asia was on the globe. Harrison Cross asked if they were going to Asia on in a jet or a car. Tanner responded to Cross’s question by saying they were going in their imagination.

A few of the children volunteered to act out the Japanese Folktale “The Greatest of All.” Children from the class played the Sun, Cloud, Wind and Wall. The story is of a self-important mouse in a quest to find the best husband for his daughter. The story takes a turn when the father discovers that the best husband for his daughter is a hard working field mouse.

Next, the children tried their hand at tangram. In tangram participants have to arrange seven pieces, called tans, which fit together to form a shape of some sort. The object of tangram is to form a specific shape with the seven pieces. The shape has to contain all the pieces, which may not overlap.

Finally the children learned origami. Each child was handed a piece of cardboard and instructed how to fold it. Tanner would not tell the children what they were making until they were finished. They first made an origami box. Then they made an origami lid for the box. They finished the afternoon with an origami penguin. Nancy Tube said “The library staff does a great job.” Her grandchildren Jack and Courtney Trube were visiting from St. Louis. Tube said her grandchildren participate in the library programs when they are on Marco Island.

Tanner said that most of the participants of the Whole Wide World Event participate in the summer reading club through the Marco Island Library. This was the first of the six week Whole Wide World Event.

The remaining five Whole Wide World Events will take place in the next five Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. in the A. Gordon Lozier Children’s Room at the Marco Island Library.

The Continents covered will be South America, e June 19, Africa, June 26, Australia, July 3, Europe, July 10, and July 17 Antarctica. Each event will be tailored so the children will learn about the culture of the particular content.

Tanner also recommended the Hoot ‘n Toot event on July 15 from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Children will learn about Florida’s owl species with the help of the conservancy of Southwest Florida. Children will experience a live owl up close and personal. They will also be able to dissect owl pellets to learn what owl’s eat for their midnight snacks. This event is recommended for ages 8 and up. The library also asks that children pre-register. The telephone number for the Marco Island Library is 394-3272.
