Marco Island’s Kit Fowler goes to the big time as he competes for the Florida Marlins Team Championship in the Major League Baseball/Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run Competition on Saturday in Miami.
He qualified by winning the sectional championship, held on Marco May 17. In that competition he had the highest overall score by competitors in the 13-14-year-old age group. Competitors came from Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties, after winning local competitions.
Fowler’s score was matched up against other sectional winners in South Florida before being chosen for the Marlins Team Championship Competition. He will compete against three other finalists who will actually be competing against scores from every Major Baseball League team’s market.
The top four scores nationally will be invited to Yankee Stadium for the national finals during Major League All-Star game festivities in July. After competing, the kids will get to catch fly balls during the All-Star Home Run Derby competition and receive tickets for the All-Star game the next evening.
Fowler qualified for the Marlins competition when his score of 1207 in sectional competition held up as one of the four best in the Marlins baseball market.
Marco Island’s Jonathon Irigoyen also won the Marco sectional 9-10-year-old competition with a score of 932, but did not come in the top four overall. Anthony Macchiarolo came in third in the 11-12-year-old sectional competition.
Also representing Marco in the sectional competition were: Zachary Burgess, fifth, and Howie Jordan, sixth, in 7-8 competition, Cole Stretton, sixth, in 9-10 and James Steele, fourth, in 11-12.
