Politicians and comedians have been known to have an interesting relationship. So perhaps it’s not so unusual that Capt. Brien’s Seafood and Raw Bar, also the home of Off the Hook Comedy Club, would be hosting a meet and greet with Congressman Connie Mack IV on Tuesday evening.
The Fort Myers republican is running for his third term in the United States Congress to represent Florida’s 14th Congressional District including Lee, Collier and Charlotte Counties.
Marco Island City Councilor Rob Popoff said that when he heard Mack was looking to reach out to Islanders, he was quick to help make it happen.
“Having a good rapport with a congressman makes issues like the bridge and toll a little more bearable ... It’s a topic he’s very aware of and I hope he’ll address it,” Popoff said of the plans for Marco Island’s Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge.
“This is an issue that will need to be decided on a state and local level ... Generally the Congressman opposes imposing tolls on bridges and roadways,” said Mack’s spokesman Jeff Cohen.
Mack is holding meet and greets throughout Southwest Florida as he gears up for November’s election day.
“I met Connie Mack on several occasions. He said he wanted to have some presence on Marco Island,” Popoff said of the origins for the meet and greet.
With Vergina’s no longer at the Esplanade, the place Popoff said is the typical center of the island’s happenings, Capt. Brien was top of the list.
Whether you support republicans or Mack in particular, Popoff said he believes it’s important and relevant to see our current congressman.
Mack may step up to a microphone Tuesday to make a statement, but mainly will be there to shake hands and meet people in a setting that Popoff anticipates will be “very casual.”
“Mostly he’ll be there to listen to what’s in the hearts and minds of the people on Marco,” Cohen said.
There will be an opportunity to have your picture taken with Congressman Mack at the event which is open to the public. Capt. Brien will supply light hors d’oeuvres and there will be a cash bar.
Popoff, a supporter of Mack, said donations are always welcome although this is not specifically a fund-raising event.
So far, Mack has raised far more contributions for his re-election than any of his challengers, according to the latest federal campaign reports.
The congressman raised $163,553 in the second fund-raising period, which began April 1 and ended June 30. That brings his total to nearly $1.1 million for the entire election cycle.
Mack is running against State Sen. Burt Saunders, a Naples Republican who raised $21,456 in contributions. Mack also has two Democratic challengers including accountant Robert Neeld of Cape Coral and write-in candidate Larry Byrnes, a Florida Gulf Coast University professor. Another Cape Coral resident, independent Jeff George, is also vying for Mack’s seat.
Although Marco Island may be small, Mack is reaching out to a place with a high percentage of republican constituents.
As Popoff put it: “Marco Island had 8,600 votes in the last election. That’s 8,600 votes that could make or break the election.”
According to the Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office there are 12,811 voters registered on Marco Island who may vote in this November’s election, an increase from last year.
Mack was born and raised in Southwest Florida and is a graduate of the University of Florida. He is the son of former United States Senator Connie Mack and cancer prevention advocate Priscilla Mack.
Prior to being elected to Congress, he was a business executive with Fort Myers-based LTP Management before becoming an independent business and marketing consultant.
Mack is married to U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack. He is the father of two children, Addison and Connie, and stepfather of two children, Chesare and Chianna. Mack resides in Fort Myers.
The meet and greet begins 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Capt. Brien’s Seafood and Raw Bar, 599 S. Collier Blvd. Suite 218. Capt. Brien’s is in the Marco Walk Plaza across from the Marco Island Hilton.

He can't get us any Federal Funds for a new Bridge, but he can cross it to get our Money.

OldMarcoMan, show up, meet Mack and share with him your concerns. I'm sure he is well-aware of the Marco bridge issue and will address that. Councilor Popoff should be commended for getting this calibre of political clout to our island. We can scream and holler all we want but decisions like the bridge are made at the highest levels not in local town hall meetings which are essentially just gripe sessions for the vocal minority.
If you want to get results then go to the top. At least one councilor understands that!

It is way past the time that gestures are made for little Connie to further his political career. He has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar at the taxpayers expense. Mack's antics are so shallow and devious that since his becoming a congressman (Lord knows how that happened) the only momentum this kid has are the corporations that have a vested interest in him being where he is.Florida wake up..this kid has to go.

Boy how words can put scent on a weed. This kid was on the board of Hooters for God's sake. It's the only job he held and he never showed up for that one. Seriously all jabbing aside. Connie Mack is marketing a name, not a mission, other than to exploit the American Taxpayer and keep old alliances in check. He cant even do a bad job without getting caught. Ted Stevens, Don Young and now Connie Mack..It is what it is Florida, dont give this kid any encouragement.

What is this a joke Jeff? Do you think if you say it enough times, you can make it go away? For Gods sake, your boy Connie colluded to have an interchange built at the urging of Young, who was sent by Stevens. It was going to do two things: Slow the corridor down and suck monies from the same people who voted him in, and two diverge monies to a developer who was in cahoots with Young and Stevens. "opposes" what a word Jeff! I bet the rest of us would like to have our own toll booths, maybe we could quit clipping those coupons for groceries. Your blowing smoke Cohen, and its flying back in your face.

The comment about "showing up and expressing your concerns"...Connie will "yes" you to death, thats what he does, smile, look you straight in the eye and act genuinely concerned and nod his head. Then he will pass out business cards with his "people's" phone numbers on it.You get the feeling he is truly interested in your issues, but he isnt. He's interested in Contributions, thats it. Thats as far as "your concerns will get you". Then his people will usher him out due to a previous commitment. "Watch" you can bank on it.

Now this is something worth really looking at:
If you check what has to be reported, you will see his contributions come from the very corporations that literally Poison our state. Contribute to Red Tide and or connected to any earmarks he tries to push up the backsides of the taxpayer. US Sugar, all the fertilizer companies, and Foamex, the largest pollutor in the state of which his daddy sits on the board of the attorneys firm that represents these companies.. Follow the contributions: there is no way this kid will bite the hands that feeds him, and killing our state at the same time..

Try asking the boy about this new revelation to the people of Florida????
Members of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure
U.S. House of Representatives
110th Congress
Connie Mack-Florida
Associated Press:
MIAMI - A new survey ranks Florida's highways 41st in the nation.
The 17th Annual Highway Performance report from the Reason Foundation looked at traffic congestion, fatalities and pavement condition, among other factors.
The survey did give the state high marks for highways in rural areas, but it wasn't enough to overcome its low rankings for funding to keep up Florida's more than 12,000 miles of highway.
North Dakota and South Carolina roads rated highest in the overall rankings from the libertarian think tank. New Jersey's were the lowest.

Barron Collier, one of Connie's largest contributors, he has sent over 15 contributions in various family member and corp names: I would say this company uses a boatload of fertilizer, wouldnt you????
Barron Collier Company’s agricultural industries include vegetable farming, packing and marketing, citrus production, land leasing, cattle ranching and mechanical citrus harvesting. Its operations are divided into three divisions: Silver Strand Farms, Silver Strand Groves and the Immokalee Ranch Partnership. BCC’s Silver Strand Division operates from its offices in Immokalee, Florida.

Oil was discovered on company land in 1942 by the Humble Oil and Refining Company, today known as Exxon. Crude oil production commenced in 1943 and continues today. Barron Collier Company is a partner, along with Collier Enterprises, in Collier Resources Company, which manages these substantial mineral holdings.
Since 1990, Collier Resources has identified several potential new oil fields in Southwest Florida and is currently active in furthering exploration of Collier’s 840,000 acres of mineral assets. The company also monitors oil production and development operations in the three producing oil fields and the activities of oil operations in the region. A total of 54 million barrels of oil have been extracted to date.
Yea I would say the fix is in when it comes to offshore drilling?????
