It might have been the shortest Collier County School Board meeting in history.
A lack of board members coming to the meeting and a lack of electricity led the board to reschedule its Tuesday meeting to 3 p.m. Aug. 7.
The Collier County School Board was already planning to operate with three board members. Board Vice Chairwoman Pat Carroll was out of town and board member Richard Calabrese is recovering from a heart attack.
But a family medical emergency kept School Board Chairwoman Linda Abbott from attending the meeting Wednesday.
Before board member Kathleen Curatolo could call the meeting to order to reschedule, the power went out at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Administrative Center, 5775 Osceola Trail.
After waiting several minutes, Curatolo, Donovan and Abbott — participating by phone — moved forward with approving the consent agenda and rescheduling the rest of the meeting.
Florida Power & Light spokeswoman Heather Kirkendall said an equipment failure caused a switch to blow on a pole.
“About 304 customers were without power for 38 minutes,” she said. “Everything is back on.”
Abbott and Carroll are expected to be back for the Aug. 7 meeting, during which the board will discuss the accreditation report and who should become the members of subcommittees on curriculum and operations that were proposed by Superintendent Dennis Thompson.

This school board needs seven people on it. It is too large a district to have only 5 members making decisions for this large of an area. Also, they should not be paid for their service. Where I come from, people do this to give back to the community, not for the pay.
