Participants flocked to The Crazy Flamingo for their 19th anniversary party Friday night. The party consisted of the always crowd favorite hot wing-eating contest, which produced a lot of excitement, and the bald eagle wing-eating contest.
Each contest consisted of seeing how many wings the contestants could eat in 15 minutes. The bald eagle wings are the hottest that The Crazy Flamingo offers.
After the completing of the first two heats of the hot wing contest there was a tie. Kevin Cowley and Bob Kernan ate 31 hot wings each. James Hubbard, the Flamingo’s manager, decided that the winner would be determined by a wing-off. Each contestant was given five wings. Whoever ate the wings the fastest would be declared the winner. In the end Kernan edged Cowley for the hot wing championship.
As everyone knows the wings at The Crazy Flamingo are very big. Champion Kernan, who was visiting Marco Island from Sarasota with friends, even said, “I wish the wings were smaller.”
Last year’s bald eagle wing-eating champion Max Donnelly had to battle Tony Horrocks and Michael Snyder for the crowd. In the end Donnelly won the contest by eating 18 bald eagle wings. Horrocks came in second with seven bald eagle wings and Snyder came in third with five bald eagle wings.
Horrocks and Snyder also participated in the hot wing-eating contest. That could have kept them from eating so many in the bald eagle wing-eating contest. Snyder also showed great fortitude in refusing to give up even as everyone could tell the bald eagle wings were taking there toll on him.
Bald Eagle wing-eating champion Donnelly said this year’s bald Eagle wings were much hotter than last year. Last year Donnelly was able to eat 36 of the wings. This year he could only manage 18. The over flowing Crazy Flamingo crowd seemed to enjoy the competition.
