Eye on the Y: Stevie goes to camp — week 8

The eighth week of summer camp was very interesting and entertaining.

The first thing that was noticed was the lack or rain for most of the week. This was in comparison to the prior week in which I thought the campers were going to be constructing boats to be able to white water raft in the wake caused by the traffic along Barfield and Bald Eagle roads.

The summer camp theme for this week was “Celebrate America.” Activities included making postcards for soldiers, American history trivia and writing essays titled “If I were President...”

We also had a Sadie Hawkins dance, A Sock Hop, and good ol’ fashioned games of Dodge ball, Potato Sack races and three legged relays.

Week nine begins this Monday and more fun, games, and field trips are scheduled. “Camp Rock” with Lee Brovitz and Rick Morrow is also scheduled to begin Monday. The band camp includes “hands on” instruction in guitar, bass guitar, drums and percussion, vocal techniques, sound and stage production, stage presence and student performances. The program fee is $250; open to experienced musicians ages 8-16 and is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This camp will lead into Boot Camp Advanced for ages 8-18 that will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 6. The fee is $275 per camper.

“Camp Rock I” is a pre- requisite for Boot Camp Advanced. Limited space is available and the location for both camps will be Marco Island Charter Middle School main stage.

Registration continues for the following specialty camps: Zoo Camp, All Skills Volleyball Camp, British Challenge Soccer Camp, Advanced Guitar Camp and Swim Lessons with Dottie. These camps are slated for August 4 to 8.

Strength training Camp begins Aug. 5 and the last Theater Camp with the productions of “The Producers” begins on Aug. 11.

Skate park hours remain 6 to 8 p.m. through August with skate lessons available on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Tennis enthusiasts continue to enjoy Cardio Tennis and Round Robin play.

Keep in mind that the “Y” offers afternoon aerobic classes for those who work during the day as well as those morning classes such as Cardio Blast Strength training, Sunrise Yoga and Tai Chi.
