Heated play part of indoor soccer

The indoor basketball court was steamy, like the players as they charged all over the court in heated soccer games on Sunday.

Albert Varetto, who plays for A. C. DaVinci was taking his turn as volunteer referee. His big-time playing days were in Turino, Italy, now it is more for fun.

“While aggressive, it is friendly play, almost family style,” he said. “It doesn’t mean a lot who wins or loses and you get a lot of good exercise.”

There are eight teams playing in 5-on-5 games, including goalies. There are two 20-minute periods, with a five-minute break in between. Age of players is 16 to 50. The majority of the players are in their mid-to-late 20s, but on Sunday a number of Lely High soccer team members chased each other around the basketball court, with all walls in play.

The game is fast, played in a much smaller area than a lengthy soccer field. The weak of heart shouldn’t play in goal as the shots come fast and furious, with great speed.

“The games are intense and very competitive,” Tom Garousi said. “There are some really talented players.”
