Marco Island police are continuing to investigate the death of a woman found in the water in Marco Island’s Factory Bay.
Police responded to a report of a body in the water near Angler’s Cove Condominiums just after 9 a.m. Sunday.
According to employees at the Angler’s Cove Tiki Bar and Cafe, the body was found by a boater who came into the Tiki Bar on Sunday morning to call 911.
The deceased woman, identified by the city only as white and approximately 50 years old, has been “tentatively” identified by police, according to a statement from city Public Information Coordinator Lisa Douglass.
However, officials are waiting to confirm the woman’s identity and notify her next of kin before releasing a name to the public.
Residents of Anglers Cove said they also wouldn’t release the woman’s name until the investigators release the information and the family is contacted, but did say the woman is a resident of the condominium.
“The rumor mill is spinning here. I know some of her family just got into town, in Naples. I don’t know the progress of contacting them,” said Laura Meton, the condo association manager.
“We haven’t always had the best reputation here and I don’t want this (incident) to make that happen again,” she added.
While the investigation is still under way, Meton said she didn’t want to release any information that may turn out to be incorrect.
A cause of death isn’t being identified by officials, who are working with the region’s medical examiner to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. No information has been released to indicate whether there may have been foul play involved in the death.
“This isn’t the movies. This isn’t ‘CSI’ TV. Call us back in a few weeks,” said Lt. Dave Baer of the Marco Island Police Department.
Marco Island Fire Rescue and the Marco Island Police Department responded to the 911 call, which was made at 9:04 a.m. Sunday from the tiki bar at Angler’s Cove.

What???????????? Gee Whiz Guy!!! Not a very good response in light of the significance of finding a dead body on Marco Island. If this Police Deparetment is to continue and go forward in a professional manner, then it's surely time to consider an in-house spokesperson trained to share facts and information involving the police and fire departments.Lisa Douglass may be fine for routine city matters that are more generic in nature, however Emergency services should have someone trained and experienced in releasing relevant and appropriate information that avoids compromise and yet informs the public on facts they are interested in.The Douglass release involving the recent arrest of a Marco Island Officer is a great example of how loose lips can sink ships. The above comments on csi tv is contrary to what is expected from an agency that is in the process of investigating a serious situation that has the potential to become a crime. Perhaps someone else should watch a little more tv to observe how other agencies would respond in similar circumstances?

Just another callous response from a cop that thinks he has license to treat people that pay his salary, like dirt. You need a refresher course at the academy Baer!

Instead of all this nastiness do you not think that perhaps we might have a little respect for the poor dead lady and for the feelings of her family. Maybe the police could have been a little more tactful but you guys are just making a bad situation worse. Come on- be nice for a change.

Lt. Baer and Lisa Douglas will only reveal to the public and media what the top city officials tell her to. It used to be a lot different for the Marco Eagle and Naples News before former senior reporter Ed Bania quit last summer. A professional, he investigated deep and told the real story about police, fire, government and a lot more before anyone else in the media did.

Thanks Lt Baer for the PROFESSIONAL response to the media. We now know that you lack any skills in dealing with the press as well as the public. A job well done.

My condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Metts. May she rest in peace.

I can just imagine if her body was in the water for any length of time more then 24 hours it was bloated and had nibble marks from critters, the occasional gull peck or sea turtle bite. Then when you go to grab her the skin literally peels, flakes and disintigrates in your hands from being in the salt water too long. So much for an open casket funeral. No offense. Very sad!
Maybe that's why the Lt. was short with the reporter...

Mr. Issler:
Your statements above about Ed Bania is a complete lie. Many of us in Naples and Marco Island and people at the Naples Daily News, including their editor and vice president of editorial know that Mr. Bania quit on his own accord and was not fired or asked to resign. We will notify Mr. Bania of your slander. Perhaps a defamation of character lawsuit is appropriate.

bankerguynaples:
It certainly was a slanderous remark by Issler.
Bania should be notified at once.
Issler has gone over the line so many times on these blogs and it is about time he be held accountable.

Everyone of you should be ashamed of yourselves. What if this was your family member and stranglers where writing these remarks about them. Avenger you truly need to get a life & compassion for others. How would you feel if this was your family member and someone wrote something so morbid things about them.
I personally know Terry’s family and YES it was unbearable seeing their daughter, mother and sister in that manner. I pray you never have to go through something like this. Getting a phone call and being told your daughter, mother and sister was just found dead in canal was the worst day for this family.
As fare as the police department, yes I agree all the police departments in FL need to take a course on how to deal with grieving families. Being rude and cold is the last thing one needs when they are dealing with such a tragedy. We all need to have compassion for others, and before you write comments put yourselves in others people shoes first. Think before you write or speak.

Lorenab,
I think you confused my post (#12), where I expressed condolences to Ms Metts’ friends and family, with the ugly post (#13) by Jadip811. That's understandable, as my screen name is right in between the two posts. I was trying to change the tone of the comments, as was jaguar in post #8, because a human life had been cut short, and people were really missing that point. Ms. Metts deserved better; she will be missed. Again, my condolences for your loss.
