Fast facts
Konrad Meyerhofer was born in Bavaria, and grew up to attend three years of instruction in culinary arts, a “very tough course” as he recalls it now. He spent five years working in various upscale hotels in Switzerland, and then emigrated to New York City in 1974, where he was the executive chef at the famous Essex House.
He came to Marco Island with the Marriott organization and fell in love with the area. Wanting to do things his own way, he opened the Bavarian Inn on Winterberry in March 1982. Specializing in German cuisine, it was such a success that he followed this with Konrad’s across the street, and managed both establishments for quite some time.
Today, he has narrowed his focus to Konrad’s alone and has one of the most successful restaurants on Marco. Although called a seafood house, they offer all the usual items such as steaks, roasts and chops, but also serve special Greek, Austrian, Asian and other foods.
Konrad recently celebrated his marriage to Sharon Milardo, and the genial gentleman from Bavaria says it’s a marvelous combination of German and Italian culture.
Re-enact, will travel
The kid in all of us loves a parade, and nobody more than members of the Marco Island Historical Society who don costumes and represent figures from our local history. To help our friends in Everglades City celebrate the Fourth of July, several members decorated a bright red convertible to ride while posing as Thelma Heath, Tommie Barfield, Captain Bill Collier and Deaconess Harriet Bedell. Present were Ed and Kathy Miracco, their son Ed, Betsy Perdichizzi and Marion Nicolay. The weather was glorious and a great time was had by spectators and re-enactors as well.
