There truly is nothing like a Fourth of July Celebration at the Marco Island Residents’ Beach.
Our members arrive early, toting umbrellas, coolers (with no glass, of course!), beach chairs and beach toys. With umbrellas and sun shades dotting the sand, the beachfront instantly becomes a cornucopia of color.
On July Fourth, though, our favorite colors are red, white, and blue. It is amazing to see the array of bathing suits, t-shirts, hats and accessories that are donned by all. You think you have seen it all, that there could be nothing patriotic that you haven’t seen, but suddenly last year I saw very unique face paintings on the cheeks of two of our members. A husband and wife had red, white and blue fish painted onto their faces and when they kissed, the fish also kissed! I’ll be on the lookout today for an exceptional display of patriotism.
Each year the disc jockey plays wonderful music for all to enjoy, but the most touching moments for many come as anthems for our Armed Services are blared out across the sand. Older men who enlisted in World War II, the Korean War, those who served in Vietnam, Desert Storm I, and our young men and women who have represented us most recently stand and salute our strong, beautiful flag.
We have the freedom to celebrate July Fourth because of the sacrifices of so many men and women. Let’s stand with them today and show our appreciation.
Many individuals make the July Fourth Celebration at Residents’ Beach a possibility. From the Marco Island Civic Association board and committee members and staff, to the Marco Island Kiwanis Club — that spent hours cutting sweet, juicy watermelon — to Dr. Ken Snyder — who drove from Miami to set up an arts and crafts tent for the children — to the Police and Fire personnel along with the Police Foundation and CERT Team.
It all comes together on the Fourth and ends with huge blasts of fireworks out in the Gulf of Mexico. The City of Marco Island is again supporting a breathtaking fireworks display, which will begin at 9 p.m. It is sure to be a thriller of a day for our Marco Island community.
Remember to bring your Residents’ Beach ID card with you whether walking or driving. Remember not to bring glass or fireworks of any type. Anything that shoots into the air is illegal in the state of Florida. See you at the beach!
