Air cut
Eking out a little extra gas mileage may not have been such a priority in the recent past, but today’s outrageous gas prices have changed all that.
Talk gas savings, and any motorist will listen.
One technique is to fill tires with nitrogen, instead of the oxygen/nitrogen mix that constitutes air.
The benefits, says Jerol Ayasun of Taray International on Marco Island, are better mileage because nitrogen maintains a more constant tire pressure for longer.
The company has for the past decade been distributing machines that convert regular air to nitrogen, notably to a big transportation company on the East Coast.
In addition, all Costco stores across the nation use the machines.
Now, a local service station, Progressive Auto Center, has incorporated the machine into its service schedules and is offering the nitrogen as an option to motorists at around $9 a tire.
Top ups are free for a year thereafter.
Taray International distributes the machines worldwide, Ayasun said.
The trend to nitrogen-filled tires is increasing, with many cars coming straight from the factory that way, he said.

Post-storm strategies
People might think they have their hurricane preparation plans nailed down, but there’s always something more to learn.
A phone card, for example, could be an excellent accessory should cell phones be inoperative after a storm.
This was one of the points highlighted at a seminar presented last week by the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce at its new “Lunch Bunch” series of lectures and seminars.
It takes the place of the previous Breakfast Before Business sessions.
The seminar was aimed primarily at business owners, but condo manager Al Diaz said some of the tips were relevant to anybody.
Presenters were Florida Gulf Coast University procurement specialist Daniel Telep, Jr., and Dan Regelski, regional Small Business Development Center director.
Susi Winchell, diversification manager for Collier County’s Economic Development Council, also spoke, talking about bridge loans and other options for financing hurricane recovery operations.
Diaz said another solid business tip was for owners to plan an off-site base where they can take calls in the aftermath of storms.
He said he’d also been unaware that bridge loans to assist with cash flow in the event of disasters are also relatively easy to obtain.
Market mural
Inching closer to its planned opening date some time this summer, Big Cypress Market Place is now 80 percent leased.
At the same time, the developers continue to introduce innovations, the latest of which is a huge photographic mural of the Everglades.
Big Cypress Market Place will embrace an air-conditioned flea market and winery, food arena, Tiki bar, produce market and trade show area.
Vendor and event center leasing information is available at 262-3210, or online at www.BigCypressMarketPlace.com.
In the House
CHS Healthcare on Marco Island has a new pediatrician.
Dr. Kelly Craig is now at CHS Healthcare’s Marco Island Pediatrics location, and comes to Marco from CHS’s Horizons Primary Care Center in Naples.
