I’m sitting on the family room at home channel surfing. On the sports channel is the X Games or whatever it is that is airing skateboarding. I, being a baby boomer on the older side of the group, have no interest in watching and quickly change the channel to something else. Boy oh boy, what a mistake.
I should have been watching. I should have taken notes. I should have stayed on that channel. Why? Because then I would have known what was going to happen at the First Annual Marco Island YMCA “Shark of the Park” competition held last Sunday, a cold, windy day at the skate park.
Over 40 skaters from K-8 grade entered the event. Total attendance was over 100 and all participants demonstrated their best moves to impress the judges.
Each participant skated twice and the total score count towards their final position.
I did not know the moves, they had names — if you didn’t know — and I did not know how the judges scored the run but what I did know was the skaters were a joy to watch.
I was amazed by the agility and balance prowess of these remarkable young ladies and gentlemen. All the parents should be proud of their sons and daughters who took part in the tournament.
All special congratulation goes out to fifth grade student Hagen Smith who, because of his skateboard ability and incredible finesse, was crowned “King Shark”. His runs were a joy to watch as he effortlessly glided through the course and demonstrated his knowledge of the skateboard.
The next time a skateboard program is on the tube, I guarantee I will be watching.
