The Marco Island Charter Middle School basketball teams traveled to St. Ann School in Naples to chalk up varsity wins.
The Eagles soccer teams also enjoyed wins in their first Collier County Middle School Soccer League games. The boys won, 2-0 and the girls 4-0 over Gulfview Middle School.
In basketball, the boys used a second-half surge to win, 41-32.
The Lady Eagles topped the Lady Dolphins by a score of 35-30, but it was a battle from start to finish, with several lead changes.
“We survived a very tough, physical game with St. Ann”, said coach Craig Fisher. “They had a guard who tried to drive to the basket every time down the floor. This put a few of our players in foul trouble early.”
Fisher credited players who stepped up at key times.
“I was very pleased with the play from Jenna Lundquist and Mary Gibler, both seventh graders” said Fisher. “Jenna came through with two critical free throws at the end of the game. Mary Gibler was instrumental in beating St. Ann‘s press.”
Katie Hogan led in scoring with 15 points. Her rebounding skills were apparent as she didn’t let up under the basket. Mary Gibler had nine points and Jenna Lundquist scored seven.
The girls record improved to 10-3 on the season.
The boys game saw a close battle.
“The boys game started out slow,” said Chris Adams, assistant boys coach said. “It looked like it might be an off night, but the boys came back to win. What was nice was that everyone got a chance to play.”
At the end of the first and second quarters, the Eagles were down by one point, but gained momentum after halftime.
“I was surprised that we were behind at the half,” coach Roger Raymond said. “I was pleased to see the boys really turn it on to score most of their points in the second half.”
A key in the second half was the play of Kit Fowler.
“Kit wasn’t feeling well and I didn’t play him in the first quarter,” coach Roger Raymond said. “He really came on for us in the second half, scoring 20 points and hitting some key shots.”
The point production was a career high for Fowler.
Also leading the boys in scoring were Matt Browne with seven and Matt Gerhardstein with four.
The Charter teams host Manatee Middle School on Saturday in the Collier County Middle School Basketball League play. The boys play at 11 a.m., followed by the girls at noon.
In soccer, Matt Gerhardstein booted in both goals, while Eli Henderson played solid in the net, coach Jackie Sauter said. She also said that Kyle Adams played very well on defense.
With Amanda Lopez lading the way with two goals and Natascha Schenk and Madeline Bolsen, each scoring a goal, the Lady Eagles won convincingly.
“Both teams had excellent regular-season records and we are glad to get these extra games in the county league,” Sauter said.
Normally, the boys play in the fall and the girls in the spring, but the new county league is playing over the winter months. The soccer team next plays on Monday at Golden Gate, with the boys playing at 5:30 and the girls at 6:45 p.m.
