A swarming defense was the key to victory for the Marco Charter Middle School Lady Eagles basketball team against Golden Gate last week. Here, from left, the Eagles Lisa Feola, Farrah Waldren, Sarah Downey and Jessica Johnson, who actually hits the ball, gave the Golden Gate player little chance to score in the Eagles 40-9 win.

The Marco Island Charter Middle School Lady Eagles are soaring with a win of 40-9 over the Golden Gate Lady Falcons, bringing its season record to 9-3.
Unfortunately for the boys they ran up against a very good Golden Gate team, losing 59-31.
“Once again, it’s great defensive plays by the girls that make these victories possible,” Coach Craig Fisher said. “We didn’t allow any points between the three-minute mark of the first quarter until the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter. I wish we could do that all the time.”
The Falcons scored four points in the first quarter, then went 20 minutes before scoring five points the final minutes of the game.
“I’m really pleased with how well some of the subs are playing, especially Jenna Lundquist,” said Fisher. “She does a tremendous job on defense, coming in for an injured player, Marissa Anguilano. We got our usual strong play from Katie Hogan and Sarah Downey.”
Points leaders in the game were Katie Hogan with 14 and Sarah Downey with 12, who knocked in two three-point shots.
The boys more than met their match against the Golden Gate Falcons.
“Golden Gate was an athletic team, with five or six intimidating players,” said Eagles Coach Roger Raymond. “They were stronger physically, and had more maturity. If you’re not playing well, missing free throws, and don’t shoot well, the game becomes like a snowball going downhill. “We would have been hard pressed to beat them even if we played a perfect game.”
Although the Eagles lost, Raymond said it helped the team.
“I told the boys that we are a better team than we were before we played this team, and we will be a better team the next time we play,” Raymond said.
Leaders for the Eagles were Matt Browne with 12 points, followed by Matt Gerhardstein with eight. Browne and Victor Lora each scored a pair of three pointers.
The Eagles play in the Collier County Middle School Basketball League, hosting Manatee on Saturday. The boys play at 11 a.m., the girls at noon.
