Senior softball standings tighten

Nacho Mama’s, Rookies in lead

A healthy Nacho Mama’s took over first place from an ailing Moose team in the Island Division of the Marco Island Senior Men’s Softball League.

At one point the Moose won 13 straight games, but injuries have seen them lose seven of eight.

By splitting games and ADKOS losing two, Rookies went ahead in the Marco Division.

Here is commissioner Bill Shurina’s report in order of games played.

Cedar Bay, 7, Moose, 5

Cedar Bay won its third straight game while handing the Moose its fifth straight loss. The game was tied in the sixth, 3-3. Cedar Bay’s Steve Sayre had a two RBI hit in the second and Bob Levasseur a RBI in the third. Dom Fiorda had two RBI and Ed Kingsbury knocked in the tying run for the Moose. Cedar Bay rallied for four runs, led by Craig Cunnigham’s RBI double. The Moose scored twice more, but fell short, on RBI hits by Ron Hobson and Tom Angelo.

Cedar Bay, 9, Bertram Orthopaedics, 8

In a nip-and-tuck battle, Cedar Bay beat Bertram’s in extra innings with Fran Diotte driving in the winning run. Also contributing for Cedar Bay were Bernie Seidman with a two-run double and Jim Green with a run-producing triple. Bertram’s Dave Coward and Jerry Engel each had three RBI in the game. Bertram’s turned five double plays in the game.

Nacho Mama’s, 3, Sand Bar, 2

For the second straight game Nacho Mama’s beat Sand Bar by a run. Nacho’s scored its run off the bats of Clay Zyerveld, Doug Tuttle and Mike Hopkins. Sand Bar scored its runs on Knapke’s double and Ron Engels triple. John Luegering of Nacho’s and Ron Shudes of Sand Bar each had three hits.

Nacho Mama’s, 8, Bertram Orthopaedics, 3

Bertram’s led early, 3-1, on a Jerry Engel and a two-run double by Nick Brooks. Both players had two hits in the game. Winning pitcher Jerry Cnudde helped his cause by knocking in two runs. Mike Hopkins slammed out three hits, including a triple and had two RBI. Steve Kaufman and Mike Behr had two hits and an RBI each. Ray Niemeyer and Joe Cervelli also knocked in runs.

Moose, 9, Sand Bar, 4

The Moose ended its five-game skid by scoring five runs in the seventh inning. John Cavanagh had three key hits, including a double and triple, producing three runs. Teammates Dave Coward had two hits, and Dom Forida and Tom Angelo each had two hits and two RBI. Ron Shudes had three hits for Sand Bar. Art Fletcher had two hits and George Schnorr slammed a triple and a double.

Sand Bar 5 Cedar Bay 3

In a closely-played game Sand Bar held off Cedar Bay behind the pitching of Jim George.

Sand Bar’s Ron Engels and Ron Shudes each had two RBI, and Dan Cody had two hits and a RBI. Tom Pugh had two hits and a RBI, while Jim Green and Fran Diotte each knocked in a run.

Bertram Orthopaedics, 7, Moose 6

Bertram’s opened up a 7-1 lead over the Moose, then held off a sixth inning rally to win.

In the first and third innings Bertram’s scored three runs on hits by Pete Keelen, Herman Griffith, John DeRosa and John Barrett. In the fifth Larry Thompson drove in what would be the winning run. The Moose scored a run in the fourth and five runs in the sixth with the big hit being a bases-loaded double by John Cavanagh and RBI hits from Jimmy Cuevas and Lou Wolfenson.

Nacho Mama’s, 10, Moose, 7

In a game determining first place in the division, Nacho Mama’s edged out the Moose. The Moose went ahead in the fifth inning, 6-5, only to see Nacho’s score five runs in the sixth to claim the win. Nacho’s Clay Zyerveld who had three hits, knocking in five runs, Mike Hopkins had three RBI on two hits, including a home run, while teammate Bill Shurina had three hits, including a triple. Ed Kingsbury headed the Moose attack with three RBI and two hits. Tom Angelo had three hits, while Dom Fiorda, Jimmy Cuevas and Ron Hobson had two hits each.

Cedar Bay, 8, Sand Bar, 3

Cedar Bay broke open a one-run game 4-3, scoring four runs in the seventh inning. Bob Levasseur and Tom McCullough each had two RBI on two hits each. Bernie Seidman had three hits for Cedar Bay. Sand Bar runs were scored on RBI hits by Rob Engels and Jim George. George had three hits, while Dan Cody and Art Fletcher had two hits each for Sand Bar.

Marco League

Capt Brien’s, 10, Rookies, 6

Capt. Brien’s hitting attack was led by Dan O’Sullivan who had three RBI on two hits. Stan Sutphen had a key two-run double, and winning pitcher Jake Jacobson, Mike Galatis, Dan Stanard and Leroy Fishleigh had two hits each. Rookies John Remhoff had two doubles and Dick Corley a home run and single.

Marco Community Bank, 13, ADKOS, 8

Marco Community Bank won its sixth straight game. Mitch Gilbert provided the offensive power with a home run and a double, while teammate Joe First had a triple. Pat Caraggio had a double and triple, and Chet Dal Bianco also tripled for ADKOS.

Cathy O’Clarke’s, 11, Crazy Flamingo, 0

Roger Wise pitched a four-hit shut out. Joe Kruse, Frank Dooley and Charley Zimmer all had two hits. Key hits in the game were a bases-loaded triple by Bernie Bierman and a two-run triple by John Ranieri. Zimmer, Wise, Bill Dauch, and Bill Diamond all knocked in runs.

Crazy Flamingo 10 ADKOS 9

Flamingo’s held off a seventh-inning rally by ADKOS to earn the win for pitcher Jack Patterson. Jack Stevenson had four hits, Dick DeAnna and Duncan Brodie had three hits, while Fred Kramer, Tom Patterson and Sonny Emerling knocked in two runs for Flamingo’s. ADKOS hitting came from Doug Smith, Fuzzy Fazekas, Pete Baker and Pat Coraggio, all with two hits. Baker had a double and Fazekas a triple.

Rookies 14 Cathy O’Clarke’s 7

Rookies Dean Lambros continued his hitting streak, helping to put them in sole possession of first place. Roger Fleming, Al Bozzo, and Nick Brooks had three hits in the game, with Brooks knocking in three runs and Fleming and Lambros two each. Roger Wise had two hits and two RBI for O’Clarke’s. Tony Meilan, Bill Dauch, and Bob Myslovic also knocked in runs for O’Clarke’s.

Capt Brien’s, 11, Marco Community Bank, 9

Capt Brien’s ended the Bank’s six-game win streak. Stan Sutphen, Dan O’Sullivan, and Chet Stewart each had two hits and two RBI for Capt. Brien’s. Jim Langdon, Leroy Fishleigh, Mike Galatis and winning pitcher Jake Jacobson had two hits in the game. Chuck Wilson had a big game for the Bank with a home run and a triple. Ray Zielinski had two hits and two RBI, Bruce Steele two hits and three RBI, and Fred Toxopeas two hits for the Bank.

Island Division standings show Nacho Mama’s, 15-7, Moose, 14-8, Sand Bar, 9-12, Cedar Bay, 9-13 and Bertram Orthopaedics, 7-14.

In the Marco Division, Rookies is 12-6, ADKOS, 11-7, Crazy Flamingo, 10-8, Marco Community Bank, 9-9, Cathy O’Clarke’s and Capt. Brien’s, each 6-12.
