The First Baptist Academy teams were poor hosts on Monday, winning both basketball games against Marco Island Charter School.
Charter hopes to bounce back when they host East Naples Middle School in Collier County league play on Saturday, with the boys playing at 11 a.m. and the girls following at noon.
Against First Baptist Academy (FBA) the Lady Eagles lost 33-19, while the boys fell 56-31.
“I’m happy with the way the girls played,” said girls coach Craig Fisher. “They played hard the first half, but the third quarter was weak. We need to beat East Naples if we want to make it into the tournament.”
Fisher liked what he saw in Jenna Lundquist.
“Jenna Lundquist, had a good game. She’ll be getting more playing time against East Naples,” Fisher said.
Taylor Bell and Brighton Summers each scored three-pointers in the game, while also scoring were Lundquist, Katie Hogan, and Marissa Anguilano.
MICMS boys hosted FBA in December for a real thriller in which MICMS won in double overtime. That was not the case this time.
“The boys played a good team tonight and there’s no shame in losing to them,” said boys coach Roger Raymond. “(FBA’s) Scott Stewart is a good coach. Anytime we make a mistake, and things get bad, they tend to get worse. Their biggest guy had no fouls called against him. We got no breaks inside. The game just got away from us.”
Although MICMS led at the end of the first quarter, FBA led the rest of the game. Scoring from the three-point line were Matt Browne and Kyle Adams. Also scoring points for the boys were Matt Gerhardstein, Kit Fowler, Todd Stephenson, and Jimmy Fleming.
“We’ll have to go back to the drawing board, but that’s okay,” Raymond said. “They played hard and we have to get ready for the East Naples game.”
