The Marco Island Incorporation Study Committee reached an impasse in preparing a single report. It was decided, after heated debate, that the members for incorporation will write their own report, as will those who oppose incorporation.
When it comes to the Marco incorporation, Goodland residents want no part of it. The Goodland Civic Association, led by Allen Greer, sent a memorandum to the Incorporation Study Committee, citing concerns that Goodland would not remain separate. “Regarding any inclusion of Goodland in any proposed incorporation should be decided by referendum, with Goodland deciding its own destiny,” Greer said. “Goodland would rather be a separate entity.”
Collier County is closer to buying the Marco Island Utility systems. The commissioners chose to negotiate with the firm of Black, Crow and Eidenses of Naples to prepare an appraisal on the value of the system. The county is also seeking an appraisal from the Deltona Corp., owner of the system. Deltona had earlier said the system was worth $12.5 million. It included $9.5 million for the system and another $3 million for water and sewer commitments not yet filled. The commissioners have earmarked $50,000 for the appraisal.
“If we can’t reach an agreement on price then we will go to the next (appraisal) firm on the list,” said Commissioner Clifford Wentzel.
Emily Savage has been named chairwoman of the Marco Island Summerset Festival Seafood Chowder Competition, to be held on Labor Day.
“I am very excited about a chowder competition,” said Savage, winner of many culinary prizes. “I am looking forward to what type of recipes are entered. I am a conch chowder fan myself.”
Tony Mosso is the new vice president of the Marco Island Civic Association. He takes the place of Leigh Plummer who moved up to president after the death of Walt Fischer.
