Weather isn’t the only thing dampening Lely High golf spirits. The lack of players is a more serious dilemma.
The girls have but two starters back and yet to have six players sign on to play matches.
The boys have four returnees, but still looking for the two players or more to fill out the starting roster.
“I have Geoff Stephenson, Greg Hauze, Tim prior and Ethan Hilliard back,” Coach Kim Francisco said. “They saw a lot of action last year, with Geoff being our top player.”
Mike Griffin played some as a junior and Geoff’s brother Todd, a freshman, could help.
“Because of the weather I really haven’t had time to evaluate a number of freshmen trying out for the team,” he said.
The boys and girls teams open the season against Palmetto Ridge on Thursday.
The girls team is in a tougher situation.
Coach Kevin Smith has just two key players back, Cora Johnson and Katie Francisco.
“I’m trying to recruit some girls and know that a few are interested,” Smith said. “I’m just not sure how many we will have by our first match and how much playing time they would have had since the weather has certainly stalled us.”
