Lely High senior Sabrina Carrender is the Winged Foot Scholar-Athlete nominee for the school.
She will meet with the Winged Foot Award Committee at 5:15 p.m. today.
Each high school in Collier County has named one student.
Brian Provost is St. John Neumann’s choice. He is the grandson of Tom Shea of Marco Island.
Paul Ruby, Lely athletic director, said the Lely committee had a tough time picking a nominee.
"There were six or seven candidates who were well qualified, but her name kept coming back."
Carrender played cross country and soccer, is a leader in the school’s ROTC program and is very active in community work, Ruby said.
The winner receives a $10,000 scholarship. Other finalists each receive a $3,000 scholarship.
Previous Lely winners were Ryan Krzykowski, 1993, Jacki Harr, 1997 and Eric Beights, 2002. Shannon McGregor of Marco Island is the only St. John Neumann winner.
The coveted award, established in 1990 by the Collier Athletic Club (CAC), is modeled after the Heisman Trophy. Terry Dean of Barron Collier won the first award.
Overall, students from Naples High have won five times, Barron Collier, four, Lely, three, Immokalee, two and St. John Neumann, Community School, Gulf Coast and Palmetto Ridge, once each.
Dr. Charles Karpas, Frank Donnelly and a handful of CAC founders initiated the event. Bud Hornbeck, a founding member and chairman of the event for 15 years, says the award does what it was meant to do in the community.
"The Winged Foot Award recognizes students who excel in athletics and academics," he explained. "Over the years the kids really haven’t changed. These are absolutely the best. Annually, the schools have trouble picking their candidates."
