The early reaction to the new Marco Island Eagles Youth Football Organization joining forces with the First Baptist Academy of Naples to form a Collier County League has been positive.
“Since the initial article in the Eagle we have received many e-mails and phone calls about the league,” Greg West, Eagles board president said. “People like the idea of cutting down on traveling as we did and being able to compete better in the new league,” he said.
Previously, the Eagles played all Miami-area teams, except for the Naples Gators.
“They also like that older kids that are lighter can play down to their weight,” he said. The Eagles will have four teams in three weight divisions, with all games in either Marco or Naples.
Sign-ups for players and cheerleaders begins from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Mackle Park.
At the same time kids can sign up for the Lely Jr. Trojan Football Camp. There will be two camps, beginning June 16 and June 23, from Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., each week. Lely football coach Steve Pricer, his staff and members of the team will take part in the camp. Each camp will focus on conditioning and skills, with contact drills in football pads at the end of each week.
The cost is $100 for one week and $150 for two weeks. Sign-ups for the teams, cheerleading and the camps can be done online at marcoeagles.com. Sign-ups will continue at Mackle Park until the end of school. Practices begin in mid-August with games beginning Sept. 6 and ending Oct. 25.
