For the Lely girls and boys tennis teams it boiled down to the other teams just having too much talent in Class 2A playoff action.
The girls battled valiantly to place second in the Class 2A-District 12 playoffs, making it to the regional, but losing to Bishop Verot.
The boys fought to a special playoff in district competition before falling to Clewiston, who advanced but lost in the regional.
In district play the girls were without Lauren Embree who was playing in the prestigious USTA Easter Bowl 18-year-old competition in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Embree, 17, lost in the finals.
No matter, senior Lauren Mitchusson, who played the No. 1 slot much of the season when Embree was not able to play because of national events, won her semi-finals single match, as did senior Kara Sajdak, sophomore Jennifer Stout, senior Anna Radliff and freshman Katrese Daniel.
The doubles teams of Michusson-Sajdak and Radliff-Stout won their doubles matches, but all lost to an extremely talented Naples team in the finals.
In regional play, Mitchusson gave up her No. 1 spot for Embree to play. By doing so she could not play at another level on the team because players could only play at their qualifying level.
Embree won her match, but the team fell 4-1.
The boys, who had a tough regular season, really battled in district play. While Naples walked away with the title and won the regional, Lely and Clewiston battled to an 8-8 tie in the district. It was determined that only the singles matches, no doubles matches, would decide who went onto the regional.
The No. 1 and 3 singles matches were played simultaneously, with Lely and Clewiston splitting. Playing No. 1, Clewiston’s Naseef Azan topped Lely’s Randy Dudenbostel, 8-1, while Lely’s Greg Hauze downed Adolfo Fuentes, 8-1, in No. 3 singles.
Clewiston’s Josh Ingram was too much for Lely freshman Zach Rabani in the No. 2 singles, winning 8-1.
