I have been kept busy this week with the layout of the May issue of the “Eye on the Y” newsletter. This newsletter is delivered with the Marco Eagle each month on the last Friday of the month. It also is mailed to all active members and distributed at all of the 2008 Corporate sponsor locations and out other retail and social places around Marco Island.
The May issue will be devoted to 2008 Summer Camp and all the exciting programs that will be available to area youngsters. Summer camp begins June 2 and continues through August 15. According to Family Service Director Stephanie Pepper, “we have new themes, new games, and new parties planned. The hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Grades K-6 can register. Kids have to be 5 years old by June 1 to be eligible to attend camp. Come for the whole summer or sign up for a week at a time. We welcome everyone!”
Parents, register today at the Customer Service desk.
Specialty camps at the YMCA are scheduled throughout the summer and the line up is diverse and interesting. New camps include “Zoo Camp” and returning camps include “All Skills Volleyball,” “Summer Theater,” “Scott Stewart Basketball,” “Roger Raymond Running Camp” and “Challenger British Soccer”. More camps will be announced in the near future, so keep reading my column for updates.
Tonight is the night for the Half Way to Halloween Dance. The dance is open to all 6, 7 and 8 grade students. Admission is $10, refreshments will be served and all students are encouraged to come in costume and win some great prizes.
Registration continues at the skate park this and next Saturday, for the “Shark of the Park” competition. The competition starts at 10 a.m. and two new classes have been added: 15+ age group and “amateur” — the next step up to pro status.
The next set of junior tennis classes will begin the week of April 14. Four different classes are available to children ages 4 to 10 years and older. Call 394-3144 ext. 224 for details.
A couple of people have stopped to ask me about aerobics programs that might be available in the afternoon or evening. We have programs like Strength Training, Gyrokinesis, Step ‘N Tone, Kickboxing, Cardio Blast and Pilates available. These aerobics programs are available between 4 and 7:45 p.m. during the week. Stop by the “Y” for a complete schedule of fitness programs offered.
The Taste of Marco, a YMCA Fundraising event is scheduled for April 27 at the Esplanade. Volunteers are needed to help out at various areas. If you need volunteer hours or just want to help out, stop by the Customer Service desk. Some areas require you to be of legal age. We need about 40 folks, so stop by soon.
The YMCA is located at 101 Sandhill Street off San Marco Road. Our phone number is 394-3144 and the website address is www.marcoislandymca.org.
We have very popular hours of operation (I like them) and you will too. We start our day at 5 a.m. from Monday through Friday. Saturday we open at 7:30 a.m. and Sunday at 7:45 a.m. Closing time is 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.
Have a great week and we will see you at the “Y”
