The "Flying Fifty" sits in the water of the Marco River. Steven K. Lacefield, 55, the owner of the boat, was charged with failure to meet titling requirements and leaving or abandoning a derelict vessel on Florida state waters after he was notified of his responsibility to remove the boat.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission charged a Collier County man with two misdemeanors after they say he failed to remove a sunken sailboat from the Marco River.
Steven K. Lacefield, 55, whose address was not released, was charged with failure to meet titling requirements and leaving or abandoning a derelict vessel on Florida state waters.
A six-month investigation by the FWC revealed that Lacefield is the owner of a sailboat named the "Flying Fifty," that has been in a wrecked condition in public waters for 45 days, the FWC reported. The boat is registered in Delaware.
More than 30 days ago, Lacefield was notified that is was his responsibility to remove the boat, the FWC reported. Since then he has taken no action to remove it.
The "Flying Fifty" is still in the water. If Lacefield doesn’t remove the boat, Collier County will remove it and charge Lacefield with the cost of removal.
Attempts to reach Lacefield for comment on Thursday were unsuccessful.
