Collier County officials say they are closing the Marco Island Recycling Center as of today to residential and commercial recycling drop-off.

A new one is to be built in its place.

Earlier this month, Collier County commissioners chose Vanderbilt Bay Construction Inc. to build a new $1,299,975 Marco Island Recycling Center on East Elkcam Circle across from the old recycling center site.

While the site was being cleared and prepared, Collier County’s Solid Waste Management Department provided limited residential and commercial recycling drop-off at the site of the planned new recycling center.

“With the award of the construction contract, construction will now move into more intense phases requiring the termination of temporary services,’’ county officials said in a statement. “Effective Saturday, Sept. 22, the site will be closed to residential and commercial recycling drop-off.’’

In the meantime, residents and merchants can go to these sites:

**Naples Recycling Center at 2640 W. Enterprise Ave. from Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

**Carnestown Recycling Center at U.S. 41 East and State Road 29, on Monday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but it is closed from noon to 1 p.m.

**Collier County Landfill at 3901 White Lake Blvd. from Tuesday to Friday from noon to 1 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

County officials said the new site will separate vendor and customer traffic; enclose containers for various recyclable materials; provide a separate building for the collection of household hazardous waste and should require less staffing and equipment.
