You might have heard of a few small-time shows called Saturday Night Live, Everybody Hates Chris, Curb Your Enthusiasm or Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
And, just as P Funk tore the roof off the sucker in a couple classic tunes, stand-up comedian JB Smoove added the funk to a number of classic episodes from those series.
This weekend, the notoriously “still smoove” star will bring his funky freshness to Capt. Brien’s Off the Hook Comedy Club.
For tickets, visit captbriens.com or call 389-6900.
Angel Salazar was the star in last weekend’s Off the Hook Comedy Club’s performances. Salazar first achieved stardom for his silver screen role in Scarface, as Chi Chi (“Hey, don’t forget the yao.”).
Since then, Salazar has achieved success for his unique brand of stand-up comedy, which he continues to showcase around the country. Last weekend’s performances marked his third visit to Capt. Brien’s Off the Hook Comedy Club.
Salazar’s stand-up act shows he has no trouble cracking jokes about himself, or his continued corolation with Chi Chi, the coke-head he played in Scarface. Nor is he too timid to taunt his audience at Capt. Brien’s.

Comedian Angel Salazar of Scarface and Carlito’s Way with Capt. Brien after his Friday night appearance at Off the Hook Comedy Club on Marco Island.
“You have seen me in Scarface, Carlito’s Way, HBO, Showtime ... and C.O.P.S.,” Salazar said. “Now you see me live — on Marco Island — for 10 people.”
He stands about 4 feet 9 inches tall, Salazar mentions, then says a club in Anchoridge, Alaska, offered him three times more money than Off the Hook did.
But when he checked the weather report and saw there was 5 feet 3 inches of snow in Alaska, he took the job at Capt. Brien’s instead.
His brand of humor is true to his Chicano heritage. He begins his routine wearing a loose, long-sleeve shirt, which is buttoned at the collar, a black-knit cap and dark sunglasses. The first prop he carries onstage is a giant 1980’s-style boom box with the speakers carved out of it.
“Check it out,” Salazar repeats his signature line throughout the set. His delivery is deliberately thick with a Spanish accent.
(“Sheck it out,” he says, emphasizing the “ShShSh”.)

JB Smoov of Everybody Hates Chris and Curb Your Enthusiasm appears at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday at Capt. Brien’s Off the Hook Comedy Club on Marco Island. For tickets, visit captbriens.com or call 389-6900.
The closing portion of his show allows him to morph into many different personalities that showcase his many other props, which add to his hilarity, and are all presented in a seemless musical performance.
“I love the Chi Chi guy,” said Alex Gonzalez after Salazar’s Friday night performance at Capt. Brien’s Off the Hook Comedy Club. “I’ve seen him every time he’s here.”
