Surcharge or toll?
Metropolitan Planning Organization leaders today discussed the possibility of a countywide surcharge to pay for an overhaul of the Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge that connects Marco Island to mainland Collier County.
Renovation of the nearly 40-year-old bridge — it was built in 1969 — requires additional lanes. According to Marco Councilman Mike Minozzi, that money was originally supposed to come from the MPO.
That changed.
Now, MPO leaders are looking for another source of revenue to expand the bridge.
Consultants who prepared the toll feasibility study interim draft report did not offer a possible dollar figure for a toll or a surcharge.
However, consultants did point out that the county could levy an additional one percent sales tax and call it a “local infrastructure surtax.”
