Naples thumped South Fort Myers, 52-31, while Barron Collier downed South Fort Myers, 68-59 and Lemon Bay, 79-46.

“It was great to see all the local team win,” said Don Stewart, Lely coach. “We shot poorly in the East Lee game, only making two of 23 hots from three-point range. We went inside more in the second half and Parker Ayers (of Marco) delivered.

Ayers scored 11 points and grabbed a number of rebounds. For the night Lely was only 12 of 40 from the field and just 10 of 21 from the foul line.

In Friday’s game Lely romped in the second quarter against Miami Southwest, outscoring them 25-9.

“I don’t recall another Lely team shooting that badly and posting a win,” Stewart said. “Now we move on against Golden Gate in a district game on Friday.”

Although Stewart said that Golden Gate was struggling, with J.D. Woods trying to overcome an injury.

“Honestly, Golden Gate has been struggling, with J.D. battling a shoulder separation,” Stewart said. It is becoming quite a little rivalry since Golden Gate is so close.”

The game begins at 7 p.m. at Golden Gate.

Also because Golden Gate downed Lely in the Class 4-District 12 playoffs in 2006, while Lely won the regular season. Both teams went on to represent the area well in the state playoffs.

In girls basketball Lely trounced Agape Christian Academy on Saturday, 65-60.

Veronica Perry led the team with nine points and a whopping 18 rebounds. Victoria Howard added 13 points, Chelsie Dangler had 12 and Jackie Licout nine, to go with five rebounds.

The Lady Trojans record is 7-1, with a 3-0 district mark. They play at Palmetto Ridge in a district contest.

“We know that the Palmetto Ridge game will be a test for us, coach Brandon Miller said. “We need to remain focused, to value every play,” Miller said.

Miller said the team has been playing very well, starting to live up to their own expectations.

Team leader, Victoria Howard, said team goals are to win the district title, advance to the regional, with an eye in playing in and winning the state championship.

Miller said, “We are taking one game at a time. There is nothing more important than our next opponent. If we stay focused this team has the talent to do very well.”
