High school football Week 1: Barron Collier pulls out thriller over Lely, 24-21

This might have been the first official game of the football season for both teams, but Barron Collier's 24-21 win against Lely on Friday night at Lely meant more than just a number in the wins column.

Both schools came into Friday's game with a preseason win, and after .500 seasons last year and new coaches at both schools, a win in week one would set a tone toward an improved program and more wins to follow.

Although Barron came out with that highly desired victory after sophomore Marvin Kloss kicked a 23-yard field goal with a little more than a minute to play, both Cougars coach Mark Ivey and Lely coach Steve Pricer had to be fairly happy with their team's performance in week one.

To win it, the Cougars took advantage of a 15-yard penalty on Lely that brought the Cougars to the 7 yard-line with 1:28 to play. When Kloss came on the field having already kicked two field goals for 23 and 36 yards earlier in the game, hope seemed all but lost for the Trojans.

They had one more chance from their own 32 yard-line down by three, but Lely couldn't gain a single yard.

"Special games definitely won this football game for us," Ivey said.

The first half was lopsided, with Barron dominating on offense, but Lely came back to score 14 in the third quarter and take a 21-13 lead. The Trojans had senior running back Fortin Faustin to thank for that. Faustin scored all the Trojans' points almost singlehandedly -- piling up a 61-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and a 81-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, then scoring on a three-yard run midway through the third quarter. Plus, he kicked the extra points.

It was senior quarterback Vince Caputo's timely runs and solid decision-making -- plus that overall precision on special teams that put Barron on top.

Caputo came through on two-straight rushes to help the Cougars tie the game at 21 late in the third quarter. First, he gained five yards on a gutsy call by Ivey to go for it on fourth down and one. Then, he gained 13 yards to bring his team to first and goal at the one yard-line. After Tyrone Marshall snuck in a run for the touchdown, Ivey made the call to go for two, and the Cougars converted on another Marshall run to tie the game.

"I'd rather go for it and lose than lose by being too cautious," Ivey said.
