Germantown Academy (Pa.) may have the most publicized duo in the Naples Daily News Holiday Shootout, in Connecticut commit Caroline Doty and Street & Smith preseason All-American Jesse Carey.
It's Mia Nickson and Azania Stewart that might be doing the most damage, though.
The two 6-footers from Notre Dame Academy (Va.) had their way with the undersized Patriots in the paint, casting a rare shadow over Doty and Carey in the Dragons' 57-40 quarterfinal win on Saturday at Barron Collier.
Nickson had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds for Notre Dame, the No. 14 team in USA Today's Super 25 poll, while Stewart added nine points, six boards and two blocks despite sitting the final seven minutes of the first half after crashing to the floor with a left ankle sprain.
"She's a big presence in the paint, a big part of our offense, so I knew we all had to step it up without her," Nickson said of Stewart, who drew a good-natured "drama queen" label from coach Mike Teasley for writhing on the court for a minute in the second quarter. "We knew we had more size and we wanted to do more things in the paint, to put a little less responsibility on our guards."
Doty, the junior who has announced she'll sign with UConn next fall, had a quiet nine points after netting 29 in the Patriots' first day win over Miami- Pace. The 5-foot-10 sharpshooter was ice cold from the outside, collecting each of her four field goals either in the paint or on layups, while Carey added five points for coach Sherri Retif's team.
"Caroline Doty is one of the better guards I've seen, so defensively I'm very proud of what we did tonight," said Teasley, whose team held the Patriots without a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the first half, despite the absence of the 6-foot-4 Stewart. "Then I knew there was no way Germantown can defend a player that works as hard as Mia does out there."
The Dragons (12-1) will face Community School in a semifinal on Monday night at 5:20, while Germantown faces Good Counsel (Md.) in a consolation matchup at 2 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Sacred Heart Academy coach Donna Moir brought her team from Louisville, Ky., to have some fun -- fun in the tournament, and fun in the sun.

That made Saturday a particularly gratifying experience. It included a little of both endeavors, beginning with a rout of New York Frederick Douglass in the consolation bracket.
After that?
"I'm going to play some golf," Moir said, adding that most of her players would spend the afternoon at the beach.
That's the advantage of playing in the morning. It allows the chance to work on something other than the fundamentals of basketball.
A tan, perhaps.
But Sacred Heart, the Shootout champion three years ago, passed a good time on the court as well. Each of the team's 11 players saw 10-plus minutes of action against Douglass, and everybody scored at least four points.
Elizabeth Campbell, who had 16 points and 11 rebounds, was the star of the game, but she and the other Sacred Heart starters weren't needed in the second half. The Valkyries had a 42-20 edge by then.
"Today was a great opportunity to get kids playing time," Moir said. "That's the reason we're here -- to have a good time."

Pace 58, Stoneman Douglas 50
Strange to think that Chrystina Smith has missed most of the season with a back injury, since that is precisely where she put her team in Saturday's consolation win.
Smith, who averaged 14 points for Miami Monsignor Pace last season, didn't start against Parkland Stoneman Douglas, and she only played a few minutes in each half.
But the senior point guard was there at the end. In her first action of the year, Smith made two crucial free throws to prevent a nail-biting finish.
More important, however, was her role as caretaker. She entered the game, in fact, because the Spartans were struggling to get the ball up the floor.
Douglas, with its full-court press, forced turnovers to produce a late rally. The Eagles crept within 54-50 with 1:23 to play, this after trailing by double digits for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter.
"This is the first time I've had my entire lineup on the floor at once," said Pace coach Clyde Glover, who plans to give Smith her first start of the season in Monday's game. "We're a very good basketball team when everybody's healthy."
Yes, but they won't win any free-throw shooting contests. After a shaky performance from the line in Friday's loss to Germantown Academy, the Spartans were 12-for-24 until the final 31 seconds of the consolation victory.
It was then that Tabitha Drake and Smith hit four in a row. Smith's were for the final margin, leaving the Pace star with six points for the game.

Dunbar 54, Chaminade Madonna 49
As the final seconds of the consolation game ticked away, Hollywood Chaminade Madonna center Sandra Garcia had three chances to keep the Lions alive.
Try one: blocked.
Try two: blocked again.
Try three: same story.
Dunbar junior Chelsea Gordon, as was the case throughout, would not be denied, as she and the Lady Tigers turned Chaminade away time and again in the second half.
Gordon scored just four points, but she had 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. That included three in the final seconds, as Garcia looked to make it a one-possession game.
"They didn't let us put them away," Dunbar coach Dwayne Donnell said of the Lions, who rallied within two points twice after trailing by 11 with five minutes to play. "A good team never dies just because they're down."
And he could say the same for the Lady Tigers, considering what happened the day before. Dunbar got blitzed by Mount Notre Dame, 53-29, in the tournament's opening round, leaving the team 0-for in four all-time Shootout games.
They got off the schneid in part because of junior guard LaShonda Thomas. A day after being penciled into Dunbar's starting lineup for the first time, Thomas registered a career-high 18 points, including 14 in the first half.
Garcia led Chaminade with 17 points. She was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Mount Notre Dame (Ohio) 53, Cheltenham (Pa.) 33
The Cougars led from jump, emptied their bench and cruised into the semifinals with a resounding win over Cheltenham, which enters the consolation bracket for the third time after winning the inaugural Holiday Shootout seven years ago.
Tia McBride had 14 points, Kendall Hackney had 13, and Ashley Fowler and Channing Hillman had nine apiece for Mount Notre Dame (6-2), which meets the winner of Saturday's late Barron Collier/Jensen Beach quarterfinal in the semis on Monday night at 8:40.
Ashley Gale had a game-high 17 points for the Panthers, who face the Barron/Jensen Beach loser in the consolation bracket on Monday at 3:40 p.m.
