</title><link>http://marconews.com/news/2008/sep/03/report-shots-fired-during-attempted-bank-robbery-e/?partner=RSS</link><description>Southwest Florida authorities are searching for three men they believe robbed an armored Brinks delivery truck outside an East Naples bank Wednesday and fled in a getaway vehicle while a Brinks employee fired at them. The robbery occurred around 9:30 a.m. outside the front door of the Wachovia Bank at 12609 U.S. 41 E. The bank is by the Eagle Creek Shops near the Collier Boulevard turn-off to Marco Island, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Marco Island police officers responded to a call about a man lying in the roadway by the Goodland Bridge on July 30, 2007, and found him swimming naked. So they called the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, which sent a corporal and a boat from its marine unit.

Officer Stephen Mariani, 49 helped break up a drunken brawl outside a bar in February. Mariani was charged with battery June 17 after it was revealed that he struck two of the men he arrested. He also used pepper spray on them while they were handcuffed in the back of his squad car.

That is what happened to Tracy Allen, a Pennsylvania resident who was visiting Residents’ Beach in late May. Allen’s cooler contained three glass beer bottles and a glass iced tea bottle. The problem wasn’t the beer, but the glass. She was arrested May 29 for violating a Collier County beach ordinance which prohibits glass containers on the beach.

Drug Free Collier, a nonprofit coalition working to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in minors, partnered with local law enforcement agencies including the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Naples Police Department and Marco Island Police Department to curtail the sale of alcohol to minors from Immokalee to Marco Island and throughout Collier County.

City Manager Steve Thompson announced Monday that acting Chief Thom Carr is now the permanent Marco Island police chief, effective immediately. Carr, 62, has been acting chief of the Marco Island Police Department for four months and has served the department since its beginning about a decade ago.
