Nine restaurants caught for fake grouper, but most have the real thing

Posted January 18, 2008

Grouper sandwiches are as Floridian as Gators, Key Lime pie and white-sand beaches.

But nine local restaurants were cited in 2007 for advertising grouper on their menus without any grouper in stock. They did have Malaysian swai, ponga from Cambodia or farmed Indonesian sutchi in the freezser -- and not on the menu.

Most restaurants that serve grouper in Collier and Lee aren’t on the state complaint list, so when inspectors visited in 2007, their grouper checked out.
