Restaurant reviews you might have missed
Posted April 16, 2008
What's up guys!
The Daily News and our community newspapers publish lots of food coverage. Here are some stories you might have missed over the past week.
In the Kitchen with Chef Jeff Detwiller
Chef Jeff Detwiller’s story begins when he was a kid growing up on Rockaway Beach, N.Y. Family is the thread that ties together his coast-to-coast career moves and brought him full-circle to Florida.
Jon and Jenna: Your new favorite sushi place
We watched with great delight as Yukihana Sushi and Hibachi began renovating space in the Kings Lake Plaza last year. Finally, a sushi joint close to our East Naples home. Hopefully it would mean no more long drives to Sushi-Thai in North Naples and no more too spectacular tabs at Blu Sushi downtown.
Meson Olè: Fifth Avenue goes south of the border
Walking into Meson Olè, I was immediately fascinated by the genuine Mexican charm. The lime green and orange décor may sound too bright, but it so works for this cozy restaurant. There are booths and tables and chairs wrapped around a central bar area that welcomes you, along with the stained-glass windows and Mexican artwork. The staff appears genuinely happy to see you.
La Grotta’s — That’s amore
With Dean Martin crooning, “That’s Amore,” and Elaina La Grotta in the open kitchen, how much more perfect can an authentic Italian evening be? When Elaina was a little girl, she fell in love. The sights, scents, tastes, and warm cozy comfort she felt when in her Italian grandmother’s kitchen began a romance with the culinary arts that is still a love affair today.
Spicy and mild, Thai Star has it all
Whenever I go to a restaurant, there’s always a dish that makes it or breaks it for me. Ordering risotto is a great way to find out if the chef is actually capable of serving Northern Italian fare, and asking for paella in a Spanish eatery might lead to delight or utter disappointment.
