A candy store for woodworkers!
Posted February 4, 2008
Woodcraft is a national retailer of power and hand woodworking tools and supplies. This is a very well-organized store, bright and clean with all the aisles well-marked so you can find just what you are looking for. Some of the signs I saw (I don't know what these things are for but they have it all!) were for clamps, from tiny for model building to huge for I don't know what!! Also, files, rasps, chisels, scraping planes, pneumatics and power tools of every kind. Drill presses and cabinet saws. Cylinder sanders, routers, vises, clock supplies, wood burning and picture framing.
There was a large selection of specialty woods in the wood shop like White Oak, Bubinga, Padauk, Bolivian Rosewood, Mahogany, Cherry and Zebra to name a few. Domestic and exotic woods range in size from pen blanks to carving blocks to lumber packs. There is a whole lumber department.
There are things for sanding, glue, wood fillers and finishing. I saw a Groz Craftsman caliper and divider set for $39.99. A 170-piece Brad Point drill-bit set at $59.95. All kinds of bandsaws and accessories, bandsaw blades, guide blocks, tension springs, polyurethane bandsaw tires, a Kreg precision-band saw fence, and books.
They offer a sharpening service to put a keen edge on your new tool purchase or re-sharpen and revive your dull hand tools, saw blades or router bits.
There is a library with more than 500 "how-to" books and videos on every new woodworking topic. Also you can attend a class for beginners or craftsmen can just stop in to pick up their monthly schedule of classes and demonstrations.
I talked to several people while I was in there. One man from Naples, Dennis Slabaugh, said he has been waiting 20 years for a store like this! Even ladies do woodworking. Sue Thomas has been waiting eight years for this and belongs to the South West Wood Turners Club. It is in the Riverside Center and they meet every Tuesday. from 6 to 9 p.m., for all ages. She said they are looking for more people who would be interested. Call 229-6133.
Woodcraft has been in business since 1928 and operates 86 woodworking stores across the nation. The Fort Myers Woodcraft store is the newest franchise to open and is owned by Scott and RoseAnn Meyers.
Woodcraft is located in the Kmart shopping plaza one block north of Edison Mall at 3853 Cleveland Ave., Suite E. The store is open Monday-Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone: 274-9663
How did I do? For not knowing anything about wood stores, I think I covered it! I do know anybody who is in to woodworking will be thrilled to find this new, friendly store!
