Record lows last night have brought the water temps down and turned the Redfish on. The bad news is, it has slowed the Snook fishing down and brought Tarpon to a Standstill. This time of the year is what the guides call transition time. You start to see your winter species like Redfish, Seatrout, Pompano, small Permit, Bluefish, LadyFish, and The Jack Crevalle, become more prevelent in our waters. Our glamour species like Tarpon and Snook start becoming harder to find. What is cool about our area of Florida is that we can still catch those species even in the dead of winter; it is just a little more difficult because you have to get to where they live at that time of the year. This is when an ultra shallow draft boat is a neccessity. When the North East wind blows, the tides go out, where much of the ground that is normally covered with water is exposed. You need to really know where the channels are and how to navigate to the backs of the creeks where the Snook and the Tarpon winter. If you just want to catch fish than this is a great time of the year, because pretty much pick a deep area in the intercoastal waterway, get a couple of Montys jigs or some Bass Assassins and start catching. Bounce the jigs up and down off the bottom in a not to erratic motion and you can catch any number of species, dare I say, I have seen it when you catch a fish on every cast.
