Fishing this week has been great, but about to cool off.
Posted November 16, 2006
This weeks fishing has been excellent, warm water has brought the chances at laid up Tarpon and big Snook around the Passes and Beaches. Redfishing on the flats has remained the same strong and consistent. We fished both Fly and Bait this week, and did equally well, catching lots of nice fish on both. Slams were had on almost all the trips and it felt like we were fishing back in the Spring. Bait was everywhere on the beaches and around the passes and the fish were hungry as all get out. Well I believe there is a change a coming. Forcasters say the lows are going to be in the upper 40's and low 50's and this is going to push the fish around a bit. Probably won't completely knock it out because the water is very warm but it is definetly going to affect the Tarpon and Snook. So What does this all mean? Well, you just have to adjust a little. The Snook will still be around the lights at night and should still feed in the backs of the back country bays and in the deeper parts of the rivers. The Reds will get even more turned on if that is possible. The other species will come into play, like jacks and ladyfish. They are everywhere anyhow, so bight the bullet, downsize to a 4 or 5 weight Fly Rod and have some fun. They readily hit poppers and streamers and on a light fly rod they are a blast to catch. Stop by Mangrove Outfitters and pick up a nice light Temple Fork, they are inexpensive and cast like a dream, and most importantly have some fun. My personal favorite it the 4 weight Jim Teeny series it has a full wells grip and a fighting butt. and a dream to cast. I downsize my Fly Rods all winter long fishing rarley with more than a 6 weight. Good Luck and Good casting Roan z.
