Bathroom Lighting Tips
Posted September 9, 2007
The right lighting can make a difference about how you or a potential buyer feel about your home. There are three types of lighting that you need in your home: General, Task and Accent. The best lighting plans combine all three while being stylish and functional.
Lighting is very important in the Bathroom. Good lighting can help us to avoid accidents and make tasks like shaving and applying make-up easier.
To effectively start your lighting scheme begin at the vanity. Vertical fixtures or sconces set at eye level on each side of the mirror are best for providing even light across the face. Incandescent lighting provides warm light that is the most flattering to skin tones.
The shower is another high use area where good task lighting is important. If the enclosure has a clear door a dedicated fixture may not be necessary. However, good lighting will make a small shower enclosure feel bigger. Choose a light with a glass lens since plastic will yellow over time.
Ambient or general light serves as a substitute for natural light and is generally supplied by a central fixture surface mounted to the ceiling. Changing this light fixture to a pendant or chandelier is an inexpensive way to make the room stand out.
A table lamp adds a personal touch or accent lighting and doesn’t require any electrical know-how. Remember to place the lamps away from water sources. Another way to add flair is to angle the shower light (most can be tilted up to 35 degrees at installation) to highlight tile work or make fixtures sparkle.
Don’t be afraid of having too much light. You can easily install dimmer controls to adjust lighting levels and create moods. In a small powder room, a dimmer can make a single light fixture provide all three types of lighting: task, general and accent.
Electricity and water are lethal companions. Consult a certified electrician before tackling even the simplest lighting project.
