Demolition Party
Posted November 1, 2007
Many homeowners trying to save money on their remodeling projects are hosting parties where they invite their friends over for an evening of ripping out walls and laying floors. But when novices who’ve had a few drinks start using power tools, sledgehammers and crowbars, the results are sometimes less than satisfactory.
It seems there is a popular assumption that anyone can tear something out. Add alcohol to the mix and you might risk having a neighbor tear into a load bearing wall, live electrical wires or even a gas line. You’d never let your contractor show up to work after drinking alcohol, why would you trust a drunk friend?
I think most people throwing the parties understand there will be mishaps. However, they are so numerous that TV producers have created shows, such as HGTV’s show “Over Your Head,” around fixing people’s remodeling mistakes.
You are not saving money if you have to do it twice. If you really must throw a construction party my best advice is to open the bar after the project is complete!
